As far as my employer is concerned, we are still bound by our telecommute policy and for the number of days we have to report we are to report until the company declares something otherwise. I like to think of my employer is actually trying to use the situation as a pseudo-surplussing tool in which they get rid of headcount without being blamed for directly doing so. Cynical? Not if you know who I work for.

IBM? Comcast? AT&T? The list of asshole companies is endless!

My company has killed almost all business travel (especially for internal meetings), participation in conferences and trade shows, and even some events we host. For client meetings scheduled before this virus spread, our management stated that if we don’t feel comfortable traveling, we can cancel the trip and do it remotely and they’ll support us. As for me, I work from home full time and don’t travel very much, so fortunately I don’t have to worry about going into an office ever or being affected by travel.

Logarithmic scale of cases, starting at 100 cases, by country. Gives us a pretty good idea of where the US will be in another week and a half. I fear how far Italy goes until they taper.

I guess there are strains of this that arn't contagious? They just announced the case in Sudbury was a non contagious one so anyone that may have been near him does not need to worry. He was even sent home but asked to self quarantine as precaution.

So it looks the US actually has learned from Italy and things are shutting down left and right. Hopefully it's not too late.

I was actually thinking this morning that the west and east coasts of the US may have two different strains, if the reports about there being two circulating strains are true. The west coast is much more closely tied with China and the east coast with Italy...

Hopefully a South Korea like trend is in our future as opposed to Italy's... because yes the state of things in Italy sounds pretty terrifying. And to potentially be only 2 weeks away from that... yikes.

I'm in manufacturing so working from home is not an option.
Several of the guys at work were saying the media is "blowing this corona thing out of proportion. I'm more worried about the flu."

I hate being pessimistic, but i'm thinking ahead for a near worse case... what if the shop has to close down for a time or some of us have to stay home because someone gets infected or is possibly infected?

Maybe we should have a separate Coronavirus meme thread.... but I thought this was funny.

Bear in mind where we already are on the chart. We're part of the herd, not the exception.

Be smart. Plan for it. It's going to suck, but at least you won't be caught off-guard like your idiot co-workers.

Anyone NOT going to the gym? I go to LA Fitness which has tons of people. Thought this was a little overblown but now I'm seeing NBA being suspended, NCAA Tournament suspended, travel from Europe suspended. People are putting safety before profits, that's how you know it's bad.

People were asking for aggressive action. Now we're getting some aggressive actions. NCAA and NBA did the right thing. I think Trump is doing the right thing with Europe minus the cargo ban. Hopefully that's not the case with cargo. Israel has mandatory 2 weeks quarantine for anyone entering the country. I guess Trump could've adopted that but he decided on full block. Not the worst thing IMO.

Is there something that governments are not telling us? This is starting to get unprecedented(modern times).

Yes. They are trying to manage the absorbtion rate of the information to a certain extent to prevent widespread civil unrest and economic collapse. They are also just a group of generally self interested, mostly corporate-bought individuals whom do not see the wider population as anything but tools for their personal wealth and power expansion.

The bias of recency and personal experience combined with a lack of intuitive understanding with regards to exponential growth is a toxic mix when combined with so many past scares that ended up not being very severe. Myself included here, my initial reaction to the first wave of information was to regard it as another SARS, MERS, Swine Flu type of moderate annoyance. Unfortunately the raw data on the real impact and spread are far far worse than most can understand even now.

That is a waste of resource. This will not change your life forever.
Maybe, maybe not. We don't know what fallout this is going to have. Admit it. For one thing you don't know that this germ won't mutate and become far more deadly, something that the Spanish flu did in August 1918. And this bug has a characteristic that makes it particularly concerning. Sars didn't become contagious until after symptoms were apparent. Covid-19 is contagious for days before symptoms are apparent. Whoops! Big time problem here.

This is going to get much worse before it gets better, but it will get better.

In other more personal news our school announced that classes would resume tomorrow but that all changed about two hours ago when they cancelled classes for the remainder of the week due to multiple students becoming symptomatic. It looks like we may have the first community spread in DFW here.

An enormous problem with this is that in Italy, they've practically stopped testing, as it's beyond practical value to bother with in their current state of emergency. Similarly the case count in Iran is stratospherically higher than officially reported due to the infrastructure not really existing in a condition to accurately measure it, or an interest by their government in recording information on the case and death counts. There is an online data site where Iranian human rights activists, health care workers, civilians, and some anonymous civil personnel have been uploading videos of round the clock rapid burials, often in large open pits where many are dumped haphazardly into the thing to be covered rapidly, amidst a sea of similarly covered fresh mounds of the waves of dead. Videos of people collapsing on the streets, in front of hospitals which are closed to new arrivals due to being overwhelmed, and health care workers themselves being stuck with Cytokine storm shock syndrome, which strikes down even the young and healthy workers in stunning alacrity. Hours from outwardly healthy, to total organ failure and death, even for teenagers and nurses in their 20s.
