Latest news. Per DW, EU is working on a final form of vaccine passport scheme so folks can freely travel again (if they are vaccinated).

According to new findings by the Facebook scientific community, the spot where you get the vaccine acts as a magnet and a dime or other small metalic objects will stick to it. I just tried mine and it does not work. :(

I still have a bit of mild pain when I push on the spot though, like a bruise. Nothing visible on the actual skin, no spot or anything. The chills/dizziness is gone too, it was mostly just that one night. The 2nd shot should be fun. At least I know these effects are short lived so they don't really worry me. No runny nose or coughing or any of that, I'll take this over even a regular cold.

US Dimes are not magnetic are they? I think Canadian ones are supposed to be.

Think it depends on the year. I just tried with a hard drive magnet and everything seemed to be attracted to it. From nickels to toonies. I think older pennies were not magnetic though.

Reminds me when a brinks truck crashed on the highway spilling Loonies everywhere. They had a crane with a giant magnet to pick them up lmao.

the massive GPU crypto factories in the USSR and China and wherever are neutral with stimulus. It's the value of crypto which matters, and is not related to the pandemic or economic responses to that. This exact thing has happened periodically over the last 5 or 7 years, just as the value of crypto fluctuates and those currencies reach their various proof points, or whatever it's called.

Individuals in the US using their one stimulus check to buy...uh, one GPU, probably combines in total to less than a single mote of dust within the shortage.

nVIDIA has been shipping pallets of GPUS directly to "partners" building mining warehouses. That isn't stimulus related.
You're discounting where the underlying speculative demand drives the cryptocurrency values. Redditors with extra money and nothing better to do have been pumping up crypto over the past year; this is turn drives the Chinese miners to increase the velocity of supply. At least until the bubble deflates. Rinse and repeat every few years.

None of this is directly stimulus-related (except the YOLO/TINA aspect driving the speculative asset bubbles). Jay Powell went from a thorn in Trump's side circa 2018 to drinking the "quantitative easing" Kool-Aid for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's like he took it upon himself in 2020 to pump up the U.S. stock markets.

Nobody really knows if inflation will become ruinous, but I think there's a fair concern that Powell's see-no-evil approach isn't healthy.

Well, I suppose older people get more respect these days, partly because the population has aged (on average). Anyway, I refuse to subscribe to the bullshit notion that your life gets worse and worse the older you get. It ain't necessarily so.
Unfortunately I think you have it backwards. Although people in general do have a respect for elders, it's less than before. Not that I have any hard data to prove it.

As far as I'm concerned how old you are should have little to do with how much respect you are accorded. If you deserve respect, there's that. If not, you don't. I certainly don't subscribe to the notion that you should accord respect to all old people. Many are fine, some awesome, in fact, many are pathetic.

I said what I said only because I see more old people, I think, in the media than I used to. Again, no data, just a notion, maybe true, maybe not.

Yeah, I keep an eye on the price of food items I buy regularly and haven't really noticed a change (beer, cheese, bread, meat, frozen pizza, and so forth). I buy fuck all for produce, so maybe ultimatebob is seeing the squeeze there?

Pretty much anything for sale that rides on a truck has gone up in price, although here in Ct it's been relatively small and spotty increases.

I suspect that the closer you find yourself to places where stuff you want to buy originates, the less of a problem it will be.

One thing I've 100% noticed around here however is FAR fewer of the frequent food promo's we were seeing mid-pandemic.

One thing about most of us older folks ... whatever problems you youngin's are dealing with for the first time we've already handled more than once.

Makes for VASTLY thicker skin PLUS a low tolerance for BS. ;)

But do feel free to continue not listening to us "old foggies" and learning life-lessons the hard way! (it's very entertaining!)

I like to think of Willie Blake's words: "If others had not made mistakes before us we would make them." Save yourself some trouble! ;)

I finally feel like my life is slowly returning to normal. My wife and I took our first international trip since covid the past week. We spent wonderful week at resort in Cancun enjoying the sun and water, being pampered, and eating good food. It felt so nice to be able to travel to foreign country again. We took our first covid test since negative covid test is requirement to fly back to the US.

Today, I took my wife shopping for new running shoes at the New Balance store in Atlanta and we didn't use our masks while inside the store. We both elected to not to put on the mask and other shoppers and most employees also did not wear masks either. Honestly, it felt liberating. My wife commented how nice it felt to finally not have to wear the mask while inside a store. At first, she didn't know masks were no longer absolute requirement and now up to the individual business or establishment whether it's required or not until I told her. We also visited the Apple store but we wore masks during that visit since Apple had a sign asking people to wear masks to enter the store. Going forward, we're going to skip the mask if the business doesn't require it. My family is fully vaccinated so we're comfortable with the risks of not wearing the masks if not required.

How the tables have turned. Our region (Porcupine) is pretty much doing the worst right now.

Glad I got my vaccine and so did most of my family.

Yea, good for you guys getting the vaccine. do you feel like your area fell into a false sense of security? we're there mask / social distancing in place but ignored? just curious.

Just a note on the last part, masks help prevent the spread. Masks that would stop you from getting it haven't been available to the general population afaik.

That being said, I'm under the impression that vaccinated persons are very unlikely to be contagious, but anyone can chime in and correct me if wrong.

From what I've read nobody is 100% sure at this point, BUT they're leaning towards it being very unlikely.

I'm erring on the side of caution ... not masking up outdoors anymore though.

Agreed. I already felt like being outside and maintaining some comfortable space was enough. Still, there's quite a few businesses / facilities that will have some type of policy for a while, and I'm ok with that.

I've had and wore N95 masks from the start of this pandemic. But I'm more than ready to give up my mask now that I'm vaccinated. I was at Costco today and they did not require the mask. I didn't know while shopping but saw the sign as I exited the store.

N95 have definitely been in short supply during the pandemic. Businesses will do what they can per the state they're in. IIRC, you're in the southeast, and I won't be surprised if places up in the northeast hold onto cautionary steps a bit longer.

NY Yankees had 9 vaccinated people come down with the virus.

" With the Yankees, since the first person who was infected (third base coach Nevin) exhibited symptoms, it’s possible that he had enough of a viral load in his system to pass it to the eight other members, Binney says. Still, lots of questions remain about the details, because the CDC and New York Department of Health are investigating. But “the data that we’re seeing from the Yankees is consistent with this idea,” he says." (Binney is an epidemiologist.)

Not an epidemiologist so I don't know how likely or unlikely it is. I just know that it happened.

I read the report about the infected Yankee players couple days ago. They took the J&J vaccine. I think I read the players weren’t showing any symptoms. So vaccines did its job. That report actually gave me confidence I don’t have much to fear anymore.
