So talking about unemployment benefits... this article explains different ways it can still apply to you even if you don't qualify for regular unemployment. https://www.americanactionforum.org...s-aid-relief-and-economic-security-cares-act/

My wife left her job purposely at the end of '18 and hasn't worked since - she never applied for unemployment since it was her own decision to leave. According to the 2nd & 3rd bullet points, she can apply for PUA (pandemic unemployment assistance). I went to the NYS labor site and it says that in order to qualify for PUA, we have to be denied for UI (regular unemployment insurance), so we applied for UI first and have to await a decision via US Mail. I'm guessing we'll be allowed to apply for PUA thereafter. Since the benefits only go up to a certain date, this is time-sensitive. Supposedly for regular UI, it is retroactive and people are supposedly getting their money from when they stopped working. Is this true for PUA too - we can get benefits from when it was enacted until the end date regardless of when we officially get onboarded?

In the same boat but kinda different boat. Been unemployed for quite a while and I was supposed to start working March 23 or so and you can tell how that went. It is amazing how this damn virus has fucked everybody.

So like your wife, I applied. Will be several weeks until sorted, as my state is still figuring out the PUA.

Abbott Labs shipping a lab based IgG antibody test

I REALLY think that antibody testing will be a big key to getting our economy back in order... Is just getting people who are immune to start going outside and doing stuff again.

I traveled for work with family to Orlando, FL (basically an epicenter of TONS of foreigners going to Disney, etc.) in mid-February and after getting back home my baby, toddler, and wife all came down with a respiratory related illness. I never showed any symptoms. Regardless, it's definitely possible that they have antibodies.

Maybe this has been talked about in this thread already but I'm curious: What is everyone's emergency food?

I bought 4 large containers of oatmeal. I also have about 10 large cans of chunky soup and 5 large mac and cheese boxes.

I could probably last a few weeks on that.

Reliable antibody tests at scale are an important tool for companies and government officials to make decisions. We have a severe deficit of information about the actual number of infected people because molecular testing is and has been bottlenecked for a variety of reasons. Is it 3% or 30% or something in-between? They have literally no idea until the population can be broadly sampled for study. Blood tests can be more easily accomplished with lower risk since you're not jamming a swab in someone's nose or throat which causes a physical reaction that can spread the virus, far easier on the already limited protective equipment stocks.

Also the accuracy of a lot of the quick tests appears sub optimal even just taking the manufacturers claims at face value. Some are going to be inevitably pulled back as they are assessed.

I think antibody test is going to be requirement for getting things like travel visa going forward. It's going to be very interesting as countries implement this. I think after one major country announce the requirement for travel, all major countries will quickly follow. I'm dying to travel again. I want to go to Asia so bad.

This is a possibility however it is going to take while before the immunity profile is clearly understood.

Pastor blows away COVID-19! You see. We don't need to worry anymore. :)

Oh, and you lost your job? You should still be giving to this pastor. WTF.

Trump temporarily halting funding to WHO over its handling of Coronavirus.

Good riddance. Fuck WHO. Fuck anything that can't even acknowledge Taiwan.

It's really hard to demand reform if you've already left the table.

It is highly unlikely that this opening will do anything but strengthen China's influence with the WHO.

I wonder if they will have to come up with a new antibody test for every mutation. If so, then we will have to get retested. Does the antibody test detect for all the variant COVID19 strains in the wild? Are we getting some false postives from the normal coronavirus antibodies?

hmmm

It will be positive reform if USA pulling funding causes Tedros Adhanom to have to step down as WHO director general. Sometimes you need to use strong arm to create positive change.

That's an enormous "if" should the Chinese decide to simply step into the gap we've created. Trump's history of pulling out of stuff insisting he can get a better deal and then not getting one is extremely consistent.

China already own Tedros. Just as we all know Trump is crooked and dishonest as human being can get, we know the same about Tedros. Hopefully USA pulling funding will cause the ouster of Tedros like Trump fucking the US and the world for the past 4 years will come to end this November when the US voters kick him out. Both have low probability of happening but at least it gives us some hope positive change can come from this.

We were planning on going to Aruba in May, back in February. I'm glad we never booked any flights, hotels, or car rentals for the trip cause that definitely ain't happening lol. The timing of my St. Thomas trip was lucky as hell too. Had it been a week later, we probably would have canceled. Everything started getting real serious while we were there.

I would've likely gone to Aruba for my daughter's Spring Break last week if not for the Covid-19 virus. I took unpaid sabbatical from work end of last year so I have all the time in the world to travel now. Yet I can't because of this current virus mess. My wife and I are so anxious to travel again. It's frustrating when you have the time and money to do something but can't.

I mean this is my point, it's very unlikely to produce desirable reforms and will probably harm a lot of people in the process. A more constructive approach might work but that's not in the realm of probable actions.

I'll be happy just to get back to the beach or go on some hikes again. Luckily we've had "crappy" weather by LA standards lately, but as it starts warming up I am going to get very antsy to get back outside for hours a day. When you live within walking distance from everything but can't do anything it's such a tease.

One silver lining is that we are not missing out on anything by continuing to raise our 1 year old 24/7, who was originally scheduled to start daycare right about now to free us up more for work, personal errands, and etc. But we do have big travel plans after he consolidates down to one nap per day (should be in about ~6 months) so hopefully this resolves by then.
