non Working Hard Drives

I have Bought a number of Hard Drives and They dont Work
They all have a small circular hole in them about 15mm wide through them

ANY IDEAS?
 
where did you buy them from?holes like they do at a casino to the deck of cards, 15 mm? sounds bad, wheres the hole? Maybe they opened em up and took out the motor on ya, sounds like you got shafted
 
It could be the vent hole that lets the air pressure equalize (has filter).
Or the hole may be for the servo writer because at the factory, the last thing done to the drive before it's sealed is write the servo marks on one of the platters. This hole is then covered with a sticker.
