Non-traditional pets

I was just wondering what sort of non-traditional ATers have or know of that are safe to own. When my girlfriend and I move out of an apartment next year I think we're going to get a pet, and I was just thinking of other possibilities.

lol... didn't even realize that typo.

Eh, i'll leave it. Should make for an interesting thread. 🙂

I probably have a greater variety of pets than any member here...

If you're truly looking for something non-traditional, I think a small goat would be a great pet. You'll want to get one shortly after it's born, and you'll want to bottle feed it (vs. waiting until it's weaned). They can make very adorable pets. I know nothing about bathroom training a goat though... we keep ours in stalls in the barn.

A somewhat non-traditional pet would be to have a rabbit. There are a great variety of breeds and sizes available. (dwarfs to Flemish Giants, and possibly a few breeds that are even larger.) They're somewhat common as pets - kept in pens/cages. However, it's uncommon to just have them running around the house. Rabbits are (allegedly) relatively easy to litter train - just like a cat. In a larger pen/cage, they usually make one area a bathroom area.

There are a lot of other animals that you can have as pets... reptiles have no personalities. Fish - again, no personalities. Some birds make decent pets and actually do have a bit of a personality that you can enjoy. Research the various types of birds first though. Some birds that are common pets (cockatiel) are really cool, easy to breed, but make a huge freakin mess with seeds and stuff - you can't keep their mess contained to their birdcage. You'll be constantly cleaning up the area around the birdcage.

Guinea Pigs, rabbits, as mentioned, fish. Something from the lizard family, turtle, ferret,
chinchilla's. Go to a good pet store with variety, and check the animals out for starters that way.

we had two prairie dogs many years ago and they were great pets. fun, non smelling, very lovable, and not too dangerous.
I wish i could tell you more, but it was my dad that bought them. we kept them in a large cage during the day then put them outside when we were home.
We even had a little leash for them so they could go for walks.

The sheep like me, but I'll tell you, they are huge liars, when it comes to their living conditions. 😉

Got a Rat, actually. Pretty fun little guy, but getting old. He's going on 3 1/2 and kinda cranky sometimes.

Old Hippie! That's it! No, not sugar gliders... an old hippie! That'd be a great pet! ...well, so long as it can be potty trained.

these are not exotic, but not common i think

we have had 3 guinea pigs over 15 years and fish, both are low maitenance and not long term comittment
