Howdy all.

I love everything about Win XP. Everything except the XP way of file sharing that is.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to share folders under XP Pro. I don't wanna use the simple file sharing, I want to share specific files, w/o having people specify a username or password. Or at least, set up a username and password I can give to everyone or something. I can't get ANYTHING to work whatsoever.

I've tried everything. I've read guides on the net, nothing helps.

All I want is to share files like I could on win98... :/

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

You're out of luck if you want to do it easily.

Simple file sharing works the way Win9x file sharing does, but less securely. Your only options are sharing without permission to change things, or sharing with permission to change things.

Non-simple file sharing requires that either you have a domain controller, or that the user have an account and password on the computer sharing the files. By default the group "Everyone" has access to read and change files, but not Full Control. The "Everyone" group only applies to users on that machine though, not "anyone who connects". The only way to make your requirements happen is to make duplicate accounts on every machine on your network, or set up a domain controller.

I THINK that if a user is logged onto their local machine with a name and password, and that same name and password is configured on another machine, they won't need to type the name and password to access the files, but I'm not sure.

hm.. so how can I get simple file sharing to work like win98's? The only way it seemed to work for me is it wanted me to drag files to the shared documents folder, or something.

I'll look into the user pass thing, I didn't know the everyone group didn't apply to connecting users, so taht helps me figure out things some. thanks.

The Shared Documents folders only applies to local users. You can't access anyone else's profile on the local machine (except as an admin, which by default everyone is on XP); the Shared Documents folder is used to give someone else access to specific files when they're logged in.

There is no way to make Simple Filesharing work the same way as Win98's. The option to specify permissions based on passwords isn't available, period. The closest thing is permissions based on usernames which are stored locally and used to log in remotely.
