Non-overclocked system won't run P95

I built a NF2-based rig.

Epox 8RDA3I
Barton2500
512MB stick of Corsair Value PC3200
Antec Smartpower 350

Temps are good, applications are stable, no BSODs. But P95 wont' run for more than 15 minutes w/o erroring out.

No OC on the CPU and the memory is at 166MHz (native FSB of the CPU) so it's actually UNDERclocked.

I thought maybe b/c I was running CAS2 that was the prob, so I set it to run by SPD. Same prob.

The memory is at 2.60v (default) but it shouldn't need anymore voltage since it's about 25% underclocked.

I shouldn't need to raise CPU voltage from default either as it is at default speed too.

PS voltages are all at acceptable levels. This same rig crunched F@H for months w/o any hiccups, but in an overclocked state!

Any ideas?

I just reset everything back to "optimal" and "default" in the BIOS and am trying P95 one more time.

I've also DL'd the latest Memtest and madea bootable CD. We shall see.

Hmm. I want to say, either mis-applied cooler, or bad CPU, if everything else checks out. Was this CPU in use before, in a different system? They are a bit fragile. I know a fairly computer-literate friend who wasn't careful, and killed two AMD Socket-A chips by swapping things around too many times. :| I've not done it myself, but the AMD chips are a lot more fragile than the Intel ones that are either encased in a package or have an IHS on them. Just a thought.

Maybe you pushed it too hard when it was overclocked and it's showing it's age? I have no idea what happens with electromigration but maybe the cpu is dieing.

Thanks guys. The error is a rounding error. Something about "expected result .04, answer was rounded" or words to that effect.

The system is only a few months old. Mobo, CPU and memory all purchased at the same time from Newegg.

I had it overclocked to 2GHz b/c that's all it would do, and it crunched F@H 24/7 for the past few months. it's got the stock HSF and hits about 52C under stress, which is a little warm for my liking. Maybe it's a heat issue?

I always like my systems to be completely error-free, so I run P95 and check. It didn't work out too well this time. Oh well. These guts will be my HTPC.

Oh well. My case gets delivered today and I really need to get this thing up and running so i can have music in my living room again. I don't listen to FM radio b/c it's completely useless; I miss my MP3s.

Plus, this "HTPC Project" has eaten up a lot of time and money...i want to get it DONE.

I know that if P95 errors out, the system is not 100% stable. But being that I got no errors running F@H and everything else runs fine, it's stable enough for me.

.

I don't have any epox mobo's. I'm just wondering if perhaps it undervolts vcore like my abit does. I'd put MBM5 on there to see. I'd prolly up the vcore a notch anyway to see if that would stabilize it.

Thanks for the tip, Fern. I am running the latest MBM and the CoreV is spot-on at 1.60v. Varies b/t 1.60 and 1.62v. 🙂

Well, I just got home from work and SURPRISE! P95 ran all day (10 hours, 31 minutes) with no errors or crashes!

I guess resetting everything in the bios helped out. I never did run Memtest b/c I made an error when trying to make the bootable CD and it didn't boot.

Oh well. I guess I"m good to go. I'm not going to tinker w/it anymore. Just going to transfer all the guts from the current case to the HTPC case.

Thanks for the help.

1.60 vcore? Well, that's the problem cuz looks like you got a desktop Barton in there. The desktop needs 1.65 vcore. If it's a mobile you're OK at 1.60
