Non-native resolution looks just as good

So it's no shocker that my rig struggles in certain games.

I'm starting to play COD 2 and I noticed that with a lower resolution and AA turned up, the games looks comparable to the non-native resolution.

This will be my future fix. Just lower the res, but higher the AA.

:)

Well, I disagree. I don't like the 'smeared vaseline' look when I use a non-native resolution; no amount of AA can fix that.

But well, lowering the resolution does bring huge performance benefits and you do have an older card so I suppose you don't have much of a choice.

Bah. No matter how good something looks on a non-native resolution on an LCD, it will still have The Fuzz. LCD fuzz is absolutely the most disgusting thing you can have in your viewing experience. Despicable. Shameful. I hate it.

Death to The Fuzz. I'd rather use an eye-blinding CRT than endure LCD fuzz.

Amen to that, absolutely blows me away how some people run their desktop at lower than native. I'm more optimistic about gaming though as I've played a few games that maxed at 1620x1050 on my 2407WFP that did not kill me to look at.

It's really weird, but I've been playing my NHL 07 at 1600 x 1200, since there is no setting for my native 1680x1050 in the game.

The graphics are still great, I do not see any difference - except for the obvious deformation of the picture, but color/sharpness are the same as games played at 1680x1050.

Perhaps it has something to do with HDCP certification, or HD "readiness"...?

My boss at work runs her 24" Dell at 1024x768.

This may have something to do with it.

I have a 22" Viewsonic "HD Ready"

Everyone says it's a TN panel, but the more I look at it, I keep believing someone messed up and put a more expensive panel in mine. :)

Running at non-native res looks comparable to the native res. (except for the obvious differenve of more res looking better) I don't see the smear.

The scaling looks much better on some monitors than others. None are acceptable for text, but some games can look reasonably decent and the "smeared" appearance may be preferable to choppy performance, depending on the game.

My boss at work runs her 24" Dell at 1024x768.

That isn't even the right aspect ratio.

You tell her that :(

Sometimes I want to kill her and take the LCD home...where it will be love and cared for.

I can't imagine that a jury would convict you. :D

In general, 3D games don't look as bad as non-native resolutions as 2D images/text. I've played games at 1024x768 on a Dell 2001FP (1600x1200 native) and the fuzz was noticeable only if you were looking for it. But 2D/text on a non-native resolution is...*vomits* Also, I hate incorrect aspect ratios. Who wants to lead a bunch of fat teammates into battle to shoot a bunch of fat terrorists?

Especially not if the jury were comprised of his fellow AT video forum posters.
