non-native res on LCD - display adapter scaling much better

Hello all,

not sure if this allready well know, however I just found this and would like to share it with you.

I ahve a 19" LCD which has 1280 x 1024 res. For some reason when I tried the NFSU2 demo, the game can only be set to 1024 x 768 as max res. No idea why.

Anyway, the scaling my display does it not the best. Its not so bad in games, however on the windows desktop it is very bad.

I found a setting in the Nvidia driver where you can make the video card to do the scaling. It does a much better job.

You can instaltly see the difference on the windows desktop. However in games, for some reason, it is very hard for me to see any scaling loss at all. If you play at XGA with 4x AA, the game looks amazing and I seriously can't see any scaling issues.

Again I am not sure if this is old news, but it gives me more options for upgaming games that might run to slow. So for me, playing on XGA on my SXGA panel is a valid option now.

I am curious if there is a performance penalty for letting the display adapter do the scaling. Any ideas / thoughts / comments?

I can't really tell a difference between the two, then again, I guess my monitor already scales pretty well. Will definitely depend on the monitor though.

I would be interested to know if there's any performance hit too, but my feeling is that there really wouldn't be. You could always run a few benchmarks at a given resolution using both scaling modes to look for differences though.
