Non Mexican Latinos dislike Mexicans?

I have a good friend I work with who is Columbian. He's a cool guy for the most part, he immigrated here (Canada) from Columbia about a year and a 1/2 ago and has been living and working here since. Speaks perfect English almost, with just some accent. I've been having fun talking with him about Latino culture and the similarities and differences he's experienced here. We both work in 7-11 at the moment and come into contact with many other peoples and cultures daily. The other day he mentioned that he disliked Mexicans, after we talked with a couple of rougher Mexicans with an attitude. He said that a LOT of non Mexican Latinos hate Mexicans, that is South American Latinos. Now I know this is prejudice but there is indeed a strain of Mexican Latinos that you see who carry around the "tough guy with an attitude problem" image that you tend not to see as much in other non Mexican Latino cultures. Now labelling all Mexicans this way is the same as labelling all Americans dumb hicks just because there are some Americans from the south who happen to fit the dumb loudmouth stereotype. It's all just prejudice. Thing is I didn't know this stereotype existed in Latin America. Ever come across it yourself?

I know lots of people that dislike Mexicans who are not Latino. Many people share a dislike of Mexicans. Sometimes, I wonder if the mexicans even like themselves.

Well yeah but the surprise to me is that there is a large group of Latinos who feel this way. Not that there are non Latinos who do, that's just obvious.

Yup, my wife is Brazilian. She is a bigoted, Mexican-hating racist! Okay, that's not true. At all. Not even a little. However, we have also talked about it and it does seem to be pretty widespread throughout South America. I'm not really sure where it came from. I'll have to ask her if she knows.

true in my limited experience.

at my last job, I worked with a lot of hispanic men and women (south american or peurto rican... the company required all phone reps to be bilingual, skewing the demographics of the department). most of them used the term "mexican" in a disparaging way (as in "stop being such a mexican").

latins all hate each other. a lot

mexicans take the most heat but argentinians/chileans take a good sweat too since they siht on all the other countries

How many "Non Mexican Latinos" have you talk to about this or are you just taking this guy's word on this?

I'd like to contest that PRs hate Cubans. Our food & music is intertwined, our ancestors are both Spaniard, we both love baseball, & both equally despise Dominicans(so much so we've all moved upstate & into Canada).

I'd also like to point out that Ecuadorians hate being called Mexicans, but don't necessarily hate anyone. A few friends growing up were from Ecuador, & they generally were good hearted, somewhat shy people with sick sweet tooths. 🙂

I've had Costa Rican friends who hate Mexicans, like someone said they would say stuff like "stop being a mexican", etc. So I think there is some truth to it.

We have a Columbian here at work that thinks Mexicans are dirty, lazy, etc.... I threw a Cinco de Mayo party 2 years ago and she didn't even bother to show up because she doesn't want to have anything to do with their culture. She always comes to my parties.

A couple PR friends of mine do not care for Mexicans or Cubans much at all. In fact, their mother (100% PR) may have the strictest anti illegal immigration stance I've ever run across.

Interesting answers you all have. Seems it is something of a trend. I know that there is both simultaneously a lot of sympathy and much hatred amongst the immigrant community for illegal immigration. Some of the most out spoken opponents of illegal immigration are actually recent legal immigrants. But of course many of them are also in a unique position to sympathize as well.
