my mobo is a dfi infinity sli nf4. i already have 512x2 mb ram (kingston value) can i put in a 1gb stick of ddr400 and expect it to work well or will i need to get 2x512.

It will work, but it won't be dual channel. The only chip-sets I can think of that can run dual channel with non-matching RAM is the socket A nForce 1 and 2. I had a Leadtek 420DA and an Asus A7N8X that could operate in dual channel with 2x256MB and 1x512MB of pc2700. Both of these chip-sets only had 3xDIMMS. Channel #1 was 1xDIMMS and channel #2 was 2xDIMMS. The memory controller on the 939 platform is on the CPU.
