Non intrusive virus checking?

I had norton but hate how it really eats up resources and slows down my system.. Any non intrusive (i.e. not running 24/7) virus checkers that work well? I don't need 24/7 protection - i don't use outlook 😉 Just something to scan my system once a week or so..

ugh. i find norton to be worse than the viruses it's supposed to stop. In fact, I dont' even run ant-virus anymore because it's a waste of resources and time.

You guys must have really slow computers.... 😛 Norton doesn't bug me when it's just sitting in the background. My system doesnt' feel any faster or slower. I have a laptop with a 4200RPM drive too so any lag is very noticeable. My system slows to a crawl when the drive gets fragmented.

I agree completely. It doesn't eat up that many resources, and I like being able to disable it easily if need be. Having it run a full disk scan at 2am every Monday works well for me too.

I've tried Mcafee, Trend Micro online, and now NAV2003. 2 years ago, Mcafee, with the latest updates, could not see a virus that I knew was there. TrendMicro online found it. So I deleted Mcafee and loved having the ability to scan anytime without eating up any resources. About a year ago, another virus showed up that Trend Micro couldn't find. I grabbed NAV and it found it without a problem. So far, NAV has been perfect, and my system is running just as quick as it was before I installed it.

I can't blame it all on the wife and her blindly opening email attachments from friends... I'm on IRC, downloading this and that, doing a little bit of file sharing every once in a while... it's just bound to happen and I prefer to have 24x7. But if you really don't need 24x7 monitoring, might as well free up HD space and resources and go to Trend Micro's online Housecall.
