Non-HDCP monitor to play ps3 games?

I recently invested in a HP L2045w monitor. I looked into it quite a bit but realised it does not have HDCP, which means i might not be able to hook up my PS3 with it. I have bought all the cables and accessories needed, including the DVI-HDMI cable for video and female RCA-3.5mm cable for audio. When i change the input of the monitor to DVI (which is the PS3 input) it says input signal out of range, change settings to 1680x1050-60hz. I believe this is because my monitor is not HDCP compliant. Is there any way to overcome this problem so i can use the monitor just for ps3 games? I will not be using it for blu-ray movies or any other media, solely for games.

Much appreciated

I'm kind of surprised that the PS3 requires HDCP for anything but Blu-Ray playback. The whole point of it is to ensure that nothing is in the loop to capture the feed, but who cares if you capture video game footage? :p

What is your PS3's video output set at? At least in my experience, out of range simply means the resolution and/or refresh rate is not supported. However, I've never run into a HDCP-compliance issue (I usually check for HDCP compliance just in case). So, I'm not sure if that is used for that as well.

Have you tried resetting the PS3 output? Because its an out of range error, and I'm pretty sure there's a specific "non HDCP compliant" error.

that's true actually it would give me a more detailed error if it was hdcp, should I plug the ps3 back into my tv and change the display settings to 720p? I haven't set it to hd because the tv I was playing on was SD hahah, hence the change to the monitor for 720p. And yes I've held down the power until the two beeps which resets display, but to no avail.

You don't need hdcp for games. I would go into the settings and manually set the resolution to 720p

ok that sounds like it would work, but one problem, i don't have a HD TV in the house. Is there any other way to change the ps3 display settings to to 720p?

Hold the power button down on when you turn it on. It should beep again and reset video settings.

yeah i did that many times, it just displays an error on the screen saying:
input signal out of range, change settings to 1680x1050-60hz.

I have two cables in the back of my monitor, a VGA to my laptop and a DVI to HDMI which goes to the ps3. This error only comes up when i change the input to DVI, VGA is fine.

One thing that sounds odd is the resolution that you say your monitor keeps mentioning. You said that it reports that the DVI device needs to be "1680x1050-60hz"; however, I don't think any game console supports that resolution. 1680x1050 is a 16x10 resolution, and consoles typically operate using 16x9 resolutions (1080p and 720p).

You could use the included component (yellow plug) cable with either the monitor or a TV to get a visible picture and check the setting that way.

When I first got my PS3 HDCP was required for everything. And it was so picky, it didnt like 2 or 3 TV's I had hooked up to it, and they were major name brands. I ended up using component for a long time, until I got another TV. I dont use it for games anymore, but I wouldnt be surprised if HDCP is still required for them.

Max resolution of that monitor is 1680x1050. It could be the PS3 only supports SD, 720p and 1080p. 1080p is "out of range" for that monitor, thus no signal is displayed. Use your SD tv to set the PS3 to 720p (you'll get no image on the SD tv), then connect it to the monitor. I'm betting the PS3 defaults to 1080p when the HDMI cable is connected.

That's composite, component is the one with red, green, and blue plugs. But yeah, you're on the right track. Use composite to set the PS3 for 720p over HDMI, the monitor will most likely accept that.

D'oh! Yes, composite. I do know the difference, I just need one more cup of coffee to wake up :)

^^ As mentioned above by Raduque, the default resolution for the PS3 is 1080p which is 1920x 1080 @ 60hz.

The monitor's maximum resolution is 1680 x 1050, so it's not able to display 1080p content.

To set the PS3 to display in 720p instead, you'll have to do the following:

once you put the cables into ps3 and tv scoll over to system settings .

go to display

go to display settings

the you will see 3 options a/v s video , component cables , HDMI

click on HDMI

you will see more options that say standard def . , 420 , 720 , 1080

click on 720

@juddog, thats the problem mate i dont have a HD TV, so when i clicked on HDMI on ps3 display settings the screen went black, and it realised a HDMI cable wasnt in so it reverted back to 480p after 30 seconds.
I also have a 27" mac so i have ordered a minidisplay port to hdmi cable so i may be able to connect my ps3 with that instead. If i took my ps3 to a mate who had a HDTV and manually set the resolution to 720p, what are the chances it would work on my monitor at home?

Well as you mentioned, there are two problems:
1) The monitor doesn't support 1080p - can be fixed by setting the resolution at someone else's house first, or on another screen, then plugging back into your monitor to display at 720p.
2) The monitor doesn't support HDCP. This is the major problem. No blu ray movies will work, and most games will probably revert to the SD resolution.

I hate to say it but your best bet is to just buy a monitor that has HDCP on it and supports 1080p.

I have an HP monitor and I had to adjust the settings on the monitor itself to auto detect signal while the ps3 is on,( there was some way I got it to put 1st priority for ps3 and second for the tower pc the monitor came with. this enables me to have my screen switch automatically when I turn my ps3 on.) or you might just try setting the display options on the ps3 to 1080i that's what my settings are when I play on my hp monitor set up the same HDMI to dvi wire.

***I realize that this thread is way old but I wanted to put this up here so anyone having the same problem can use this info to attempt to fix their problem
