Non-GTA 'free roaming' driving game?

I really like the free roaming driving around aspect of GTA but I don't really care for the physics, and the GTA series in general has just gotten old for me lately.

How about Burnout Paradise? It didn't get great reviews and there isn't a demo, so it's $30 down the drain if it stinks..

I really liked Test Drive Unlimited. I played it a lot for about a month on Xbox 360.

The character models are pretty hilarious, but the game itself is a ton of fun. I'm not sure how many people play online anymore, but when I played about 6 or 8 months ago some other humans would still pop up on the map.

I liked Test Drive Unlimited more than Burnout Paradise, but both fit the description of what you're looking for.

Did you even check before saying anything about Burnout Paradise?

As someone above mentioned, it has gotten great reviews, second there is a Demo, and third I'm pretty sure you can get the game for $15-20 off Amazon.

I guess most of the games I play are 9+ games on metacritic, 8.1 seems sorta average.

Is this not the PC Gaming section? Is casual discussion that isn't a direct question not allowed?

I don't get the mentality of some people on here.

Thanks for the advice about the demo, didn't see it on steam - I'll check it out.

Discussion is all fine and stuff but when you don't even make an attempt to just type in google, why should you expect someone else too?

There is nothing average about an 8.1 user review (87 critic). If you are just going on scores to play games that you have missed a lot of excellent titles and have even played some crap.

As for other games, the ones mentioned in this thread are all pretty decent.

Ah I did spend time looking at reviews, I wanted personal opinions. Either way, I'll ignore the trollboating for the rest of the thread :)

I'm playing burnout paradise.. It isn't bad, I like that it has motorcycles. I don't like the lack of speedometer and really arcadish/console feeling. I'm going to give test drive a try, hopefully it's a bit more on the sim side of things..

Another vote for Test Drive: Unlimited (here's hoping for a new installment soon). I may have put more time into that game in total than any other driving game.

One more vote for Test Drive Unlimited. Its just driving, buts its AWESOME driving. Assloads of vehicles, especially with the add-on pack. And tons of great courses. I didnt care much for the hitchhiking aspect, but everything else was great.

TDU 2 was supposed to come out in 2009, and now it looks like 2010 wont even happen.

Unfortunately it was too easy, but yeah fun game.

Aren't Saints Row I and II both GTA-esque but with more arcade-like physics?

Saints Row 2 has horrible vehicle physics, but ya it's basically GTA.

Midnight Club 2 was such a game, never played 3 but assume it is similar.
