Non-functioning USB ports = dead board?

The power supply on my son's Athlon system blew, and when we hooked up a new supply, the system would not boot. It seemed to power up fine (fans spinning, etc.), but we got no video output, and the laser eye on the mouse did not illuminate. We tried both the onboard video output as well as the video outputs on the v-card installed on the board, and neither gave a signal. The motherboard, a Biostar A75MG, has no obvious damage, and neither does the CPU, an Athlon A6. I'm thinking the motherboard must be damaged even though it's powering up the fans, because the USB ports are all nonresponsive. Or am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sounds like a power spike from the power supply (or going through the power supply) damaged the north bridge on that board.

Try removing all non-essential parts and see if it boots. Can you try other memory? Are you sure you have all the PS plugs inserted properly?

It sounds like she's most likely dead. I have seen the same thing happen, and the board was never revived. You can try for an RMA, but I'd probably buy a new board anyway and sell the RMA board on ebay. I'm not a fan of RMA motherboards.

Why not? I've always received new boards when I've done any RMA.

It's hard to blanket that, but a lot of manufacturers do give you a refurb item under a warranty replacement. Not all, though. When our coffee maker went out we got a brand new one.

Thanks all for the replies. We tried disconnecting all non-essential parts, and the results were the same. Looks like we'll end up ordering a new board. I think it's been over a year since we got it, so I don't think an RMA is an option anymore. It's ~$60 board or so, so not a huge loss.

The credit card you bought it with might double the warranty, up to a year generally.
