Non-existant removable storage drive in My Computer

Hi,

There is a drive E: that appears in my computer that does not correspond to any hardware. It cannot be accessed, although one can read properties: 0 empty free space 0 used space. Also, it seems to be taking up a USB port as I cannot use all of the ports simultaneously- I can use all but 1 port simultaneously. If I do use all ports, the last item will not show up.

Anyway, I assume it is a leftover driver/registry error. Anybody have any ideas? It isn't my computer, so I don't have access to it right now. Just want to gather up info before I see the pc again. Also, tried to uninstall/reinstall usb already to no avail.

windows xp pro
pentium D
Dell of some sort.

thanks!

Sounds like it may have some sort of smart/flash card reader, those use a USB port, and would show up with a drive letter regardless if there was a card plugged in to it..

I'll point you in the right direction..

mounteddevices regkey is what you'll need to edit. There are some kbs and whatnot out there.

Be careful. This thing is not inside a control set so if you jack it up you won't be able to lastknowngood your way out.

This is what I was thinking. I am glad to see that my thinking was in the right track. So by deleting the E: drive key in mounteddevices you think that will remove it in my computer? Also, how would something like this happen? Improper removal of device from usb?

thanks

oh yeah- so doing a reg backup or system restore won't help if the os gets messed up? You think there is a chance i might not be able to get back into windows?

Why not just go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Then right click Change Drive Letter and Paths, and remove the drive letter completely.
