Not exactly sure why you require this coming from non-english members.

Not everyone here is a philistine. Many of us here watch foreign movies.

I just watched this.

Spike Lee remade Oldboy this year, which while very good, was not as good as the original.
Samuel Jackson's MFer rant was exceptional.

And yet 90% of the movies recommended so far resemble bad video games. Go figure. Maybe not philistines, but a lot of folks in arrested puberty.

How can I not mention The Band's Visit - an Israeli and Egyptian / Palestinian collaboration.

Here is a beautiful scene and song from this movie

For those who are interested, here is this song in full

I don't understand any Hebrew. Here is the translation

That scene above in the movie remains one of my all time favorite scenes ever...

8 1/2 is amazing and I am with you on Infernal Affairs even though I have friends who fight me on it all the time. :|

KT

My butthole could write a better screenplay than Infernal Affairs, and my dong could better edit the stock than what was put out as finished.

That's my take on it.

Animation:
Katsuhiro Otomo - Memories

3 short stories. It was absolutely amazing. Especially the first 2 short stories.

Live action:
Apocalypto

Really, it's a 'murican movie (directed by Mel Gibson) -- but it's set somewhere in Mesoamerica before Europeans settled. Even though all dialogue is subtitled, it was far more intense than most movies I've watched in the last 10 years.

I loved Delicatessen and enjoyed City of Lost Children, but holy crap was Amelie horrible. No idea how anyone could enjoy that dreck.

I know it is highly acclaimed but I could not watch it either.

A friend of mine who is fluent in five languages including French did not finish this movie either

Yeah, how could I forget Shaolin Soccer? That was totally awesome.

If you're going to the World Cup, don't watch this before you go. You will cancel your trip quicker than J.Lo.
A relative of mine was kidnapped at gunpoint there, and made to withdraw money from his account at multiple ATMs. I've read that it's called "ATM abduction".

He said he was convinced he was going to die, but they let him go after a couple of hours.

Note: He's actually ex-Brazilian, so it's not as if he was just some foolish tourist.

I read the synopsis years ago and couldn't stop myself from groaning out loud in the store.
The story of District 13 is really stupid, but the movie itself is good nonetheless, because of the excellent parkour-based action sequences.

Speaking of French movies, a couple more I liked:

JCVD

La Haine

That's part of the reason I groaned. It's a thrown-together story to promote parkour. Kinda like how some people think a "story" enhances pornography.

Parkour is featured heavily in a lot of movies now. Random badguy low-level henchmen are played by world-renowned parkour experts.

One that immediately comes to mind is the beginning of Casino Royale.

Except that District 13 preceded them. It came out a decade ago, not recently, and movies like Casino Royale were copycats in that regard. District 13 also does it better.

Anyhoo, movies like Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior are even more stupid, with terrible acting in comparison, but I enjoyed that immensely as well, because of the awesome martial arts.

Get some movies by:
Akira Kurosawa (Japanese)
Hayao Miyazaki (Japanese)
Jean-Pierre Jeunet (French)
Luc Besson (French)
Guillermo del Toro (Mexican)
Sergio Leone (Italian)
Fernando Meirelles (Brazillian)
Pedro Almodovar (Spanish)
Wolfgang Petersen (German)

Although some of them did make some English movies.
