Another vote for Pan's Labyrinth.
Also, Wings of Desire was a great movie IMO.
As others have mentioned, Run Lola Run was also very good.
I also like a lot of Akira Kurosawa films, but The Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress were very awesome.
If you want an amazing animated movie, try Spirited Away.

I'll second all of these except City of God, only because I haven't seen it yet.

Amelie

The Crimson Rivers - starring Jean Reno (Leon), France's favorite Spaniard

Blue / White / Red - Kystof Kieslowski's "Three Colors" trilogy

I'll second City of God then. It is truly amazing, and a true story. Let me tell you about Knockout Ned.

Army of Shadows
Memories of Murder
The Bad Sleep Well
Festen
Martyrs
Sanjuro
Stalker
Madeo
Un prophète

Those are some of my all-time favourite non-English films.

I also recently watched The Music Room (India) and Paradise Now (Palestine), both of which were excellent.

City of Lost Children has been mentioned several times but i didn't see Jeunet and Caro's first movie Delicatessen mentioned.

both are amazing movies.

Terribly Happy Interesting Danish crime thriller. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the subtitles, but it was easy to follow and pretty gripping.

You should really see it. Hands down the best foreign film I've ever seen. Just a stunning story about a culture and land I know nothing about, showing that some of our most basic conflicts and emotions are universal. Spectacular film. Sad as hell, but great films tend to be.

If you're going to the World Cup, don't watch this before you go. You will cancel your trip quicker than J.Lo.

Ah sorry, missed that.

Another recent one I remembered is Turtles Can Fly from Iran. Extremely well done.

Thanks, I will look for this one.

There is something about the Persian people or the culture that they tend to make such beautiful movies. Children of Heaven is among the best ever movies I have seen - and I have seen so many. A Separation is another very good one. I think it had won the Oscar for the best foreign movie (though that in itself is neither here nor there)

I have not seen Children of Heaven, but A Separation is amazing. I think getting a glimpse into different cultures that I am not entirely familiar with really adds to the films. The films we discussed are great by themselves, but there is a little something extra there since we are getting a different perspective and some insight into a different, for me anyway, culture.

The difficulty with foreign movies is to where to find them. Netflix streaming doesn't have a lot of great ones. I don't really know of any other place as such

lots of good reqs here. I'd like to emphasize these:

The Lives of Others
Amelie
Let the Right One In
City of God
Oldboy

most anyone could enjoy those.

My favorite would be:
8 1/2....I think few could enjoy that, so I won't recommend it.

I also must advise you to avoid Infernal Affairs. that movie is horrid. The Departed is infinitely better.

8 1/2 is amazing and I am with you on Infernal Affairs even though I have friends who fight me on it all the time. :|
