I think for an engagement ring, it would be BEAUTIFUL if you got an emrald cut aquamarine ring with perhaps small diamonds on the sides.!

That's actually a really good idea. Small diamond clusters are cheap.

Or you can just delve into the world of stolen jewels. 😀

yes... like this one: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://I honestly would love this ring personally.[/b]]http://www.mysolitaire.com/Jewelry/JewelryDetails/Template4.asp

I refuse to ever buy a 'real' diamond for various reasons. The main reason being the politics and the next being that it is a ripoff.

Buy a fake one if you want or go with some of the other suggestions but stick to your guns. I have a feeling the cost is not your primary reason for wanting to avoid the 'real' diamond purchase.

I got my now wife a blue topaz engagement ring since she doesn't like diamonds.

Even more so now after seeing the movie Blood Diamond. 😛

Majority of the English royal family engagement rings are blue sapphires.

Check out Princess Diana's huge sapphire engagement ring. google it.

We'll the order has been put in and payment is processing. Now I just have to decide if I'm actually going through with this.

If SHE is the one that initiated the convo about no diamond then I think it's fine. I've known other married women who did not want a diamond - one couple wears bracelets and one the woman just wears a simple band (no jewel).

Well the diamond is just a cultural norm that mass media and advertising (read: De Beers) gave the West. Yes, been taking some sociology. Don't have to abide by what the diamond companies told you.

This is what I'm leaning towards, I liked the setting below better but the jewler has said that the sapphires will look better as round stones and will be brighter than a princess cut
Round Setting

This jewler uses untreated sapphires(no heat)

Option #1:
Stuller setting number 120618 in X-1 white gold alloy, about 5 grams, 14K requiring no rhodium, stays white forever.

Center stone precision hand cut, minimum 6mm royal blue sapphire, round cut, your choice Madagascan or Australian, (they look identical to me, but I have both), approx 1.2+ carats in weight.

Side stones...matched pair of superior quality white sapphire round cut, approx 1/3 carat each.

$820

These are a different jewler in this setting

These stones are heat treated

Option #2:
Ceylon Oval Cut Blue & White Sapphire Ring 14KWG 1.80 carats total weight
5.4 grams of 14KWG
pair of 3.25 princess cut top quality white sapphires approximately
0.55-0.60 carats
premium quality oval Ceylon blue sapphire 1.25 carats (excellent rich
cornflower blue color, eye-clean clarity, top brilliance)
$975

Option #3:
Madagascan Pear Cut Blue & White Sapphire Ring 14KWG 2.25 ctw
5.6 grams of 14KWG
pair of 3.25 princess cut top quality white sapphires approximately
0.55-0.60 ctw
top quality dark blue pear cut Madagascan sapphire 1.70 carats (near
flawless clarity, dark blue color, cobalt blue brilliance)
$1075

Go with the round cuts. They seem to have more brilliance no matter what stones you choose!

That will be amazingly beautiful! I am sure she will love it!
PS, any ideas how you will propose?! 😀
