NON-CREATIVE Sound Card Recommendations?

I'm putting together a system for a friend and I'm looking for some good mid-range sound card recommendations, preferrably in the $50 range, with the only stipulation that the card be non-Creative Labs (i.e. non SB Live).

Not that I'm necessarily ruling an SB Live out entirely, but I'd prefer going with a newer technology than the relatively ancient Live cards (not to mention a more ethical company).

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing wrong w/ the "ancient" Live! cards that you would be able to pick up for 50 dollars. I think that they would be the nice way to go.

But if you insist on being "non-creative" 😉 you may want to check out the Malibu Beach sound cards, they have a nice set of sound cards that might be more "recent" for you.

Might want to check out the Diamond Sound series too. I remember the MX300 to be a great set, w/ nice A3D technology, might want to take a look on that if they're not too ancient 😉

Good luck 🙂

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz? That's also what I would recommmend in that price range. It may be a little more than 50$, but it's worth it.

You may also want to consider a card with a C-media 8738 chip, such as the Guillemot Muse XL. This card has EAX1, EAX2, A3d 1, and I3DLevel 2 support (via newer Sensaura drivers). The Quality is very good, thanks to wonderful Sensaura technology, and C-media have been good with driver support so far (they also have Linux and BeOS drivers!).

Another good card is the Philips Acoustic Edge. QSounds QMSS is wonderful (I have a card with the ThunderBird Q3d chip - also has QMSS)

Cheers
