Yeah I don't see why people favour chopsticks. If it's a cultural/traditional thing, fine. Otherwise, I don't see why.

I thought you were supposed to throw them away and use new ones every time, therefore hygene.

Not Asian, and I don't even make Asian food that much anymore, but I do have chopsticks. My parents have been to China a couple times and I was there too and I'm pretty into Chinese culture. Only reason I don't cook more is because I don't like doing dishes :p

Asian, and I have some chopsticks that are used only for a few different types of food.

I notice a new surge of whites who have a strange love for chopsticks. I don't understand it. They aren't that great. I prefer forks/knives/spoons for almost every meal.

OP you realize that all Asians arent Chinese right? Indians are Asian also, and wouldnt necessarily have chopsticks at home.

You do realize that the Chinese aren't the only Asians to use chopsticks right?

I'm as white as they come, and I learned how to use chopsticks as soon as I was old enough to eat at restaurants. So yes, I have some. Weirds me out when people don't know how to use them/choose not to.

Yea seriously. Chopsticks are a horrible way to eat food when you have forks and spoons.

Live in Japan, so yeah...
cutlery is used for spaghetti, Japanese curry, and the occasional chicken breast that I am too lazy to cut before cooking.

Yeah I don't see why people favour chopsticks. If it's a cultural/traditional thing, fine. Otherwise, I don't see why.

For the foods that I eat, which are generally more "crude" (like a roasted chicken breast or pot roast), I usually reach for the fork+knife.

However, there are actually quite a few foods that simply require chopsticks to eat. a fork+spoon simply wouldn't do. a lot of other foods are just easier to eat with chopsticks (assuming you know how to use them).

Some foods are much easier to eat with chopsticks. I was at a korean restaurant last week and I tried to be a whitey by using a fork. I was making a mess and having a hard time, so I switched to chopsticks and had a much easier time.

I somehow read that as "occasional chicken breast that I am too lazy to cook before eating."

...I'm going to bed now.

only if you didn't grow up with them and so don't have the natural dexterity. i can pick up a single pea or a drumstick without a second thought and not much effort. but if you are a n00b this is probably a strain. but its not to say the tools inferior, it just requires a little skill unlike knives and forks to be really useful.

many dishes are better with chopsticks, you can pick things out of soup noodles easily, bowls of rice with prepared dishes are easier to deal with. its like an extension of your hand. asian foods are prepared so they can be dealt with with chopsticks.
you aren't going to eat a slab of steak with chopsticks, and well there was no custom of eating your own personal slab anyways.

as for civilization, one could argue knives and forks are less civilized. it basically moves part of the food preparation to the eater. which would be convenient if you were stuck in the outback grilling up kangaroos i guess, no counter top to prepare portions. let everyone fend for themselves. civilization has to reach a certain point before chopsticks are useful. knives and forks, work in the dark ages;)

no, not really. chopsticks work just fine for east asian diet, arguably better than western utensils for that usage. I personally use chopsticks with a spoon, they complement each other very well.
