I guess I can't get this for my T-Mobile commitment, so...

Can anyone suggest a smartphone for when I start college next month?
I don't follow the trends, but I do have a nook hd+ with CM11. I say this to show that I am technically competent but for school I would like anything affordable, even WP8.1

Currently using a Samsung slider since I don't leave the house very often, however next month marks a big change in my life.

Thanks.

T-Mobile's version of this, the Nokia 521 runs about $70.

Oddly, Android doesn't seem to have any hot cheap phones like this. The Moto G is a nice cheap phone, but the unlocked model costs $180. Still, it comes with a 1280x720 HD display, which you won't find on any cheaper phone I'm aware of. So this would be my recommendation.

Since I need "cheater glasses" to read anyway, I use a higher magnification to cheap my way to a bigger screen. This, however, does mean I could utilize this higher res.

thanks for your reply

Unlike PCs, higher resolution doesn't mean smaller text (which I think you were alluding to). Phone operating systems scale the DPI pretty well. So often the text on a 1920x1080 phone will be about the same size as a 800x480 phone. The difference is in the sharpness of text. Text will be easier to read on the higher DPI phones.

Get the Lumia 1520, its a phablet. Best smartphone I've used by far, dumped my 4s for it. I like the office 365 integration with OneDrive. As a student you can save all your files there, and they will be available on each device. I use excel, word all day, ppt sometimes. What ever I do on my phone or laptop is always up to date on the other device, much faster than iCloud was. Paid $99 AT&T, installed 64gb SD, working great!
