Ah, but it does have optical zoom. (see below)

It's truly sad then, that the only thing holding me back right now will be the shape of the camera module. (I'm completely expecting the initial financial investment.) I'll have to make a final decision after holding it, but pictures of it as it stands now are not doing it justice to me.

The specs on the phone are truly amazing though:
  • The screen will be incredible:AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, 768 x 1280 pixels, 4.5 inches (~332 ppi pixel density), Corning Gorilla Glass
  • The camera will be nothing short of ultimate: 41 MP (38 MP effective, 7152 x 5368 pixels), Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Xenon flash, 1/1.2'' sensor size, ND filter, optical zoom, geo-tagging, face detection, 1080p@30fps, optical zoom
  • The ecosystem isn't completely developed, but growing quickly and is sufficient (I don't care about games or frivolous apps)
  • Nokia maps is really remarkable
Another leaked photo:

Listen, I like squares as much as the next person, but I don't see a huge problem with the round shape, wouldn't it be better in a situation where you drop it there? Plus I bet the wireless charging cover would make it so the lens module is flush with the cover anyways. Battery better be good on this though, wonder what SOC it's using too, sticking with the Krait S4 or moving on to the 600/800 series Qualcomms...

Is that a serious question? Both predecessors have square'ish camera module humps (rectangle'ish if we're really being technical).

Nokia 808:

It looks so much better than either of those.

Wow, really? The 808 looks years ahead of this thing in terms of design alone.

The EOS looks like they took the 920 and cut-out a giant circle to put the camera sensor module in...oh wait, that's exactly what they did. They didn't design the phone, they just reused what they had.

Why? Because it's got a squircle instead of a circle?

So they cut out a circle instead of a wierd rounded rectangular shape, not seeing the great problem really. The design looks a lot fresher and less heavy than the older ones.

It's funny that you're complaining about them reusing an old body whilst simultaneously complaining that they aren't reusing the old camera shape though. :)

Reusing materials is a lot different than reiterating design schemes.

In terms of design, this phone is fail to me; not because it has a circle, but because the lack of design conformity. Look at the big picture. In that big picture that camera module stands out as "not fitting" with the body. That's what I have a problem with.

The 808 looks ok for (despite?) it's shape, but ultimately I think that whole 'puffy rectangle' look is ugly. I have the same problem with the early generations of iPhones and most of the Galaxy lineup. I think a more streamlined/defined rectangle (or even the 'flattened cylinder' of the Lumia 920) is more attractive.

Also pleased to see Nokia continuing their use of polycarbon, it's the best material for a phone imo.

Another leaked photo, this time with a full aluminum body:

I might could get behind this look more. Something about the full aluminum body is more attractive here I guess.

they make the best bodies but since they are so far behind in everything else the big companies dont see fit to copy them.

Historicaly speaking, the 808 was something like $900 off contract when it was released I think? That was ridiculous, given the dying platform and smaller screen.

It's difficult to compare the L1020 to the GS4 and HTC One due to the camera alone, as well.

I don't really like the "Lumia 1020" name. It implies that the phone has advantages over the 920 (other than the camera), but it doesn't to my knowledge. Maybe it will come with some other advantages, which will certainly make the device more appealing. As of now, it just looks like a specialized 920 variant.
