After taking the wife to the store it seems the 5310/5610 is what she's looking for. Anyone have personal experience on these or reliable reviews of performance?

Pretty much every review says the same thing: If you dont care about camera quality, go for the 5310. Its cheaper and actually a better phone & music player.
Incidentally, on that first site a score of 67% is really good. They are brutal in their reviews. I dont think I've found a phone that got higher than 80%.

I read reviews on the 5610, the 5310 and the 6555 before finally settling on the 6301. The 5610 seems to score very well all around, but the 5310 got better scores because its cheaper and just as good.

I also went to a proper T-mobile store and played with each of them. Those crummy mall kiosks have a rotten selection, go find a regular store.
T-mobile seems to always have the best selection of Nokias, you will probably end up going with them. Always, always, ALWAYS go to a store and play with a working model before you buy a phone. You could have the perfect model all picked out in your mind, but as soon as you get your hands on it you realize how much you were wrong.

If you are looking for an MP3 player the 5310 is a very solid phone. Camera is average, OS is standard Nokia stuff. Comes with 1gb memory card, worth something but not much. Overall its a nice phone. For just a bit more I'm a really big fan of the new Sony Erickson TM506. Very nice phone, IMO. Camera is still only 2mp but a bigger lens seems to take better pictures. Mp3 is very good on that too, although it uses the sony memory stick type of memory, not standard micro SD. Its a very sleek phone though, IMO. Screen is awesome quality.

Yeah, can't tell you how much I love reading blind reviews from that site. Nothing like people that generally either find something about an item and rant on it till days end or those that decide its worthy of the next fanboi craze.

Which is why I'd rather hear from people that have actually owned or tried the device, particularly at a place I think would be less likely to experience the above.

I've got about 6 tmobile stores within 5 miles of the house, and we've been there to look. She was interested in a sidekick or shadow from online browsing, but those lost favor in the store and the 5310/5610 emerged at the top of the list.

I'm a tmobile customer long out of contract, which also means my current plan has long since been terminated so dropping the plan cold for a discounted phone means we get to pick a higher $/month one. So I've been checking and on ebay I can get a 5610 for the same price as the 5310 (about $150 shipped). So with cost no longer an item as it's even, hence the quandary between the two.

It's for her, so what is has (other than it must have a camera ) ranks below look/feel/performance as a phone.

Interesting, someone just posted a couple more 5310's on ebay, so could now get them about $20 cheaper than the 5610 (at $130).

I just went to Walmart this morning (forgive me, I needed milk & eggs) and stopped by the electronics section briefly.
They had 5310's for 28 dollars with a two-year plan.
Unfortunately they were $179 with no plan.

Good but if she wants a music player, the w760 is better. Better audio quality, better headphones, better designed UI - better everything
