noisy sound on quake 3 with ecs k7s5a onboard sound

doesnt happen to other games, like counter strike, age of empires 2, no problems with mp3 etc.

Why are you running crappy FPS stealing AC97 sound? Hey, you can spend next to nothing (less than $10.00) and at least get yourself a CMI 8738 based soundcard, increase you FPS & solve crppy sound problems.

I am using the onboard sound on the ecs k7s5a and it works fine with quake 3, maybe there is some audio setting that you should check in q3?
