I just got a maxtor 80GB 8mb cache hard drive. I noticed its fairly noisy when active, much more so then my 40gb ibm deckstar. Is that normal, its seems pretty noisy!?

yeah that's the "maxtor sound". They're dead silent @ idle, but when they write or read a substantial amount, they tend to make short grunts for an extended period of time. Also, they occasionally catch on fire like mine.
I bought a new Maxtor DiamondMAX Plus 9 and it is the noisiest hard drive I have had in quite a while. At idle, it is silent, but I couldn't believe how loud the seeks are. However, this was solved by using Intel Application Accelerator and setting it to Minimum Acoustic Output. Performance suffers a little, but it is barely noticeable.
