I have a dell 8100 with a western digital 7200rpm 20 gig drive that has recently gotten very loud. I called dell and they asked what operating system I was running. I stated that I had upgraded it from windows ME to windows 2000. They stated that the system was licensed with windows xp and since I changed the OS, they would not do anything for me. What a crock of crap. What is also interesting is that I purchased the computer about 1 year ago, which is before windows xp was even available. I wonder when I will receive my windows xp license????
Does anyone know why upgrading the OS violates the warranty? Is this a way to force customers to purchase their upgrades through dell in order to maintain the warranty? I have purchased about 20 computer from dell over the past 4 years. I don't think I will purchase any more dell's.
