Noisy Geforce2 MX400

Something's wrong with my the fan on the card. I checked it and the fan is kinda loose. So each time when I boot up the pc, it'll be very noisy. Is there anyway I can fix the fan? Or replace it?

My card is not a branded card. Just an ordinary clone Geforce2 MX400.

Any help please?

Thank you.

Do you use much 3d out of this card?
for a temporary fix you can unplug the fan, it won't kill anything, because there is still a small HSF even without the fan, it helps cool it a little. and then pickup a replacement GPU cooling fan from your local computer store when you get time. I did this on an Asus MX400 at work.. it doesn't hurt it at all. i replaced the fan a few days later, and all is good.

Not much 3D in use.
I'll do that and get a GPU fan soon.

THanks!

you should be fine then
if you are using 3d, the GPU might get too hot (warms up when displaying in 3d) and it could lock up. you want to keep it as cool as possible while no fan is running... so just make sure you lay off the 3d til the fan is fixed and you'll be A-OK! 🙂

Not sure what I hate most about GPU fans. That they're noisy? That they're unreliable? That they weren't necessary in the first place for most people?

Once again, I'm advocating 'go fanless'. Some old comments here.

Basically you pull off the current sink/fan. Buy a sink like the wakefield found in the above link or something of that size. If you have Artic Silver Epoxy, use it. If you don't, use the old glue on trick of applying paste to the core properly, but leave the corners bare. Mix up some regular epoxy, dab it on the corners, put the sink in place and let it set (don't slide it around and apply mild pressure to ensure good contact).

Cheaper than buying a new 40mm fan and you get to enjoy silence. Only downside is you have to give up one PCI slot if you use a taller sink like I and others have done, but most people don't seem to be using PCI 1 in the first place.

I've seen manufactuars that dont even put fans on the GeForce 2 MX chips, they are underclocked GTS ones, so they dont need them much.
