Noisy fan in a gigabit switch - what to do

I just bought this Trendnet 8+2 port switch (8 10/100mbps, 2 10/100/1000), and the fan is extremely noisy. Noisier than several of my PC's combined. Is there anything to do about this or should I just find a way to get it as far away from my working environment as possible?

TIA

Assuming there's no warranty to worry about, you might open up the switch and see what size the fan is... if it's a standard 60/70/80/92 mm etc. type, you might just be able to replace with something quieter.

Otherwise, yeah, put it in another room or something.

Yeah, careful on the voiding the warranty thing.

Otherwise moving the switch would be the easiest thing, network cable is pretty cheap and the hard part is running the cables.

It's highly likely that the fans inside your switch are a standard size. 3-pin seems to be the typical connector, too. Try popping the cover and seeing what kind of fan it is, then hit the usual suspect PC parts suppliers (Directron, for example) and find a quiet fan of the right kind.

You might try just disconnecting the fan altogether and seeing how hot it gets. It may be there mostly as a safety margin for harsher environments (which wiring closets often are).
