hey. my computer is very loud. i thought it was my case before, so i bought a new one. the one i bought is an Antec Sonata II. Its supposed to be silent. my brother has the exact same case and i cant even tell its on because its so quiet. so its not the case just being loud. i know the northbridge fan is making a lot of the noise, it is extremely loud, especially when i first boot up. i unplugged the NB fan to see if there were any other problems. it got quieter, but is still noisy. i know i need to replace my NB fan, but what could be the other problem? could my HD be failing? its a seagate barracuda 250gb 7200. ive still got 4 years for the warranty for it. i dont think its my processor or video card. when i use a pencil to stop them, it doesnt make much of a difference. can anyone help me out?

i bought a retail amd 3000+ venice from newegg, using that heatsink and fan.
im using the standard case fans that came with the case. my brother is using the same case and case fans as me, but his computer is silent
i also recorded the sound of it with my microphone. its a little amped up. i can send it if you want to, im currently trying to find somewhere to host it so i can give a link to download it

edit: heres a link to download the audio file i made, just type the code in and hit submit

unhook your hard drive and turn the computer on to see if that is making that sound. Otherwise it is most likely the fan on the CPU

You can temporarily stop fans (placing your finger carefully on the center of the fan blade) to figure out which one is making most of the noise. Then, you can take different routes to quiet it down.

It's your CPU or GPU obviously, just get aftermarket heatsinks for both. Zalman preferably. GG.

I had the same case and it is extremely quiet.

Some things to check:
Make sure the rear 120mm tricool fan in the back is set to low.
Unplug the fan power connector coming from the power supply. (It will run quieter)
Don't bother using the air duct. Take it out.

Things you can do:
Get a NV Silencer for that ATI card.
Get a Zalman cooler or a Rheostat to control your CPU's fan speed (if your bios doesn't)

When my computer was loud, it was my front case fan. I have a loud NB fan, but it only acts up when I'm playing games or running Folding@Home. All the rest of my fans run at a constant RPM. So anyway, I bought a yate-loon-like fan and it was completely silent. I figured out my crappy vantec fan was vibrating too much and causing resonance noise.

My power supply fans are pretty loud. Those are the most annoying because I cant swap them out for quieter ones.

Why not?

Yeah, but it's not exactly the least intimidating of mods to try. Remember kids that it can take as long as 20 hours for the caps to discharge fully.

I have that case - in fact, I used to have almost the exact same system as you:

Antec Sonata II - yep
Smart Power 450W (Came with case) - yep (till it died, got an enermax liberty now)
MSI K8N Neo4-F nForce4X - yep (till it died, got an Ultra-D now)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - yep (still got, but replaced stock hs/f with arctic cooling freezer 64 pro when I got the Ultra-D)
1GB (2x512) Corsair ValueSelect DDR400 - I had GeIL Value 2x512MB instead, still got it
ATI Radeon X800GTO2 - had an X800 instead (slower), now have an X1800XT 256MB now :D
250 GB Seagate Barracuda - 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7

Anyway, replace the northbridge fan with an Evercool VC-RE, available from SVC.com. Quieter, cooler, same size (roughly) so should not be a problem with it blocking off your vid card. Also has funky LEDs!)
Replace the CPU hs/f with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro (I have it, idle temps of ~28c, load of ~32c with only the stock exhaust fan on low)
Replace the vid card fan with an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer. I'm gonna replace mine with an Arctic Cooling Accelero X2 soon.

Replacing the above three fans will quieten your comp down extremely, to the point where you'll hardly be able to hear it. Hope that helps :)

Probably your optical drives making all that noise. They spin up when you turn on the computer before returning to idle.

If you can't sleep with it on, the simple and smart solution would be to turn it off.

If you want it overall quieter, you should definitely change the CPU heatsink/fan.

I wrote a guide on PC noise... It's one of the antiquated thread lurking in the case/cooling forum. Look it up, it should help you out. Basically you want to find out if it's your components making the noise directly, or the vibration caused by components. Rubber grommets would be a cheap solution to all this. And turning off the PC just isn't an option for all you guys out there, some people run servers. If it turns out to be your components making noise directly, then replace them. Zalman is great for cpus. Arctic silencer is supposedly good for making vid cards quiet. Anyways.

You really should decide on what component is making all that noise... I can tell which component is making noise just by listening to my pc 0.o Is that a bad sign? =p Just give it a try, make everything else in the room quiet, close your eyes and stick your ear close to the computer case. There are different types of whir and things like that. You can quickly tell which part of the case the noise is coming from, front or back, top or bottom. Let us know how it goes.

1. he whined
2. he's been offered various solutions, but is not limited to them
3. do you have money?
4. do you have the time and patience to undergo a more silent system?

you don't like:
-a loud system when you are sleeping

you probably want:
-to figure out how to leave you computer on and still sleep with the computer not making too much noise

you can:
-turn it off
-sleep somewhere else (or sleep through it I don't care, I have to put up with the swimming pool filter which is even louder than any computer I've heard in my life, and it's outside too!)
-configure your computer
-remove or replace fans, use software adjustment tools
-put the computer on hibernation
-whatever anyone has suggest thus far, etc.

-deal with it, because some Special Forces in the Middle East have to sleep for zero to 4 or 6 hours in a city that has rapid gunfire shots, sniper shooting, grenade explosions, cries of children getting hurt, radio signals, etc. and then they have to wake up when the sunrises and go back at fighting in a city fight - lucky if they can get 30 minutes of shut eye, most of the time they are trying to keep their sanity in tune and usually this requires trying to keep your nerves tight and ready to move when the mind says it needs to. what about the alert calls where they are needed right away and aren't given a chance to get any sleep for 24hrs/48hrs, days of staying up?

what about me, I have to put up with the swimming pool filter system, 20 times louder than your system, I got artic cooling devices in my system, it's not even quiter than a Celeron D Compaq computer.

oh yeah, some cases make more noise even with the same components swapped over from a silent machine. so consider that.
