Noise Taker 470W or True Control 550W?

Morning,

Both PSUs are about 20 bucks Cdn. difference at the moment.

Here's what I'm wondering.... Is the ability to control the 3, 5, and 12 V rails a bigger plus then the huge amperage (relatively speaking) of the Noise Taker and its 2 12V rails?

I'm not really concerned about overall power (doing fine with a 400W atm, so I'm sure wither will be fine) but what I'm looking for is most stable for my P4 rig with Raptors, DVD-RW, 9800 Pro, MAX 3 mobo, etc.

The Antec and Enermax both have same Amperage on the 3.3 and 5 V rails. However on the 12V the Antec has 24A (adjustable), and the Enermax has 31A (16A on 12V1 and 15A on 12V2) but not adjustable...

Any opinions? Is it a wash, and just go with the cheaper PSU?

Thanks.

Noisetaker is a lie when they say quiet it's nothing of the sort. And what's with dual 12's? thier individuALLY too low and one wonders how they are allocated or slit. No I like a big fat single 12V line and antec which is quieter... BTW I own that noisetaker. and had a true 480 which had some issues. Still I recommned for quieter operation antec

For P4's, go with Enermax psu's, but not the Noisetaker crap, this one here has more power than you'll ever be able to use, and costs much less than either of the psu's you're looking at: link. I know that newegg doesn't ship to Canada, so you don't need to tell me that, but that particular psu is by far the best for you on a money/performance standpoint.

I'll have to check the specs on it. What is the noise level like on it?

After reading several reviews, I picked up a Tagan TG480-U01 from ajump.com for a mere $78US shipped. Very high quality build, seperate power to all rails, has features the Antec 550 lacks (i.e. active PFC,etc.), a ton of connectors and is very quiet to boot.

Here's a review from ocprices where they threw a Vapochill with a ton of devices at it and it ran without a hiccup.

Hrmm tempting. I guess the issue with the Tagan would be availablity for us Canucks...

Edit: Hrmm... Ajump.ca?????? Need to check this out 😉 Thanks Bob.

Just noticed that... Although it's giving me the following shipping options....

UPS Standard: $28.60
UPS Express Saver: $39.40
Will Call: $4.00

Ouch.. Need to figure out what "Will Call" is...

"Will call" is when you go pick it up yourself, directly from them. And they want to charge you $4 to come pick it up yourself?😕 Sounds like this company's a bit fishy to me...

Well I droppped them an email, see if they have any cheaper methods. It almost looks like they just run a very small department on the Canadian side... If Tates will order from 'em I'm pretty damn sure they've got to be reputable 😉

Define "very quiet." I'm a bit obsessive with finding a no noise or very little noise PSU and have bought several in that effort to no avail. In fact the PS is the only fans in my system right now since I use passive radiators and water blocks however they probably could'nt handle the additional load of a watercooled PSU. Need to find a quiet one. I've been thinking about the Zalman 400 but it may be a bit underpowered with it's 18 amp 12V rail...

From the above mentioned review, and Tagan:
Even at maximum load the claimed noise output is a mere 28dB, where as at 500rpm it was an excellent 21dB.

I have that psu and it's very quiet, I'd guess about as quiet as the True Power in my Sonata (stock 380 watt) which is pretty quiet. A panflo L1A 80mm on my cpu heatsink is louder.

I've got a True Control 550 and it's heaven on earth! Low noise with a LOT of power! I love this psu from Antec!

I am a happy antec 550 truecontrol owner
it is very quiet even with the fan turned all the way up
i've also owned a few other antec psu's, including the true color 480
a 430 watter came with my antec case, this psu ran my athlon rig pretty well
also the 550 truecontrol can be modded for those who want higher voltages 🙂

i've never heard of those other people you mention, but if it appears to be made of quality components and you want to try it then compare price and the amps available on the 3.3 and 5v rails in particular.
most psu makers overdue the 12v rail and don't seem to put enough power on the 5v and especially the 3.3v rail (kinda like intel's mhz marketing because most people only look at the biggest number, which is the 12v rail here)

Well that Tagan has intruiged me, but Ajump.ca wants UPS only shipping (which is horrrrrible rates in Canada)

Guess I'll think about it some more.

For those with the Tagan, how hot does it run? I have a True430 and it provides good power, but it probably generates more heat than any other component in the rig. The top half of my case in the back is always much warmer than the rest of it and I'd like to get that under control. Thanks for any info!

Doobie

i have the noisetaker, and to tell you the truth, i have never heard a silent power supply, and i kinda tie that term to this PSU. it ownz! did i mention i have it cranked to the max?
