Hi folks,
Can anyone tell me what the noise levels of the fan(s) on the 6800/X800 series of cards are like these days?

My PC as a whole is very quiet, and I'm used to the whisper of my VGA Silencer on my 9800 Pro.
I'm curious as to whether the latest fast cards can match the near silence of that or sound like vaccum cleaners.
Also, does anyone know if Artic Cooling are bringing out new VGA Silencer's for the X800 and 6800 ranges?

Thanks in advance ppl

:)

They are loud. Wait for aftermarket cooling to come out if you like a very quiet PC with a 6800 or x800

My 6800GT sounds almost exactly like my BBA 9800 Pro. Nvidia did a great job with the fans this time.

Please only answer this if you have owned one or both of these cards. Not from what you've heard.

both of the GT's I had were quieter than my case (<25db) fans and I wouldn't have even bothered putting on aftermarket cooling unless it was a waterblock (from DangerDen).

The GT is a good deal louder than the stock XTPE fan. It's not overwhelming, but if you are into a quiet PC, you won't be happy with it. The x800s have VGA silencers available, unfortunately the 6800s do not.

VGA silencer rev 3 runs with the x800 cards. Coming from this I doubt you will like either stock fan.

the stock fan on my X800 pro is pretty silent. No different noisewise than the 9700 Pro that is replace, imho.

Thanks guys!
I can stand some noise whilst playing games, the game itself should drown out any fan noise, but what about regular 2d desktop stuff. Do these cards have fan throttling which lowers and speeds up with temps of the core, or are they just one speed for 2d and 3d?

The X800 has fan throttling I believe, according to GamePC's review. They also mentioned that the 6800 is louder than the X800.

ONCE AGAIN, ATI FANBOY!!! Look at the SPCR there are new revisions of the VGA silencer already in the works for nVidia cards.

that last reply was crap! i have a 120mm panaflo (the slow-quiet version), a 120mm antec quiet fan(?), both in a sonata case with the quiet psu, and a zalman 7000 hsf, and i can most definately hear my x800pro. the sucker is way, WAY louder than my old 9700pro w/artic silencer.

basically, what i'm saying is that without a silencer of some sort, you will hear the card. no doubt about it.

(sorry if i offend you markfw900)

it's just my own opinion that's all

OK, I have a Aluminum PADDED case, 2 120 mmx38 mm Panaflo's, one 120mmx25 Lian fan, 2x25 80mm Panaflo's, an Antec 550 EPS psu. With all of these, the sound level may be higher, but even before I added the last 2 120mm Panaflo's I couldn;t hear the X800 (mounted upside down like BTX, and in a padded case). You situation is too different than mine to call my results crap. I am not offended, since you can;t know my situation. Anyway, it is pretty quiet. My Sonata is quieter, but with all those fans (forgot the 2 Thermaltake Silent boost K8's) it has to make a little noise.

It doesn't matter if it's already in the works if I can't buy one right now.

Who cares, just because you didn't know they were making one don't call me a retard.

EDIT: For those of you who would like to see what they look like... Linky (Note the NV Silencer 4 is not shown)
