Noise From Videocard

When playing games or doing other videocard instensive programs I get a high pitched almost buzzing noice from my video card or around my video card.

My card is a ASUS Geforce 6600GT

Is this something to worry about?

Note: There are no artifacts in the games or any other video defects.

No its not from the fan. It happens only when the video card is working hard and stoped the second ot stopes

Its because the revs up more during intensive gaming to keep the card cool. Is this a recent occurence or has it happened since you got the card?

See? I'm not the only one who thinks this.

It's not the fans. It's cheap compenents. Resistors, capicitors, alternators, I don't know. I just remember hearing that some cards where made with a cheap sort of something and that they make high pitched noise under load.

I HIGHLY doubt it's the fan

Why?

Why what? If he want's to test the fan theory, he can get rivatuner or whatever and crank it up to 100%, but that probably won't reproduce the noise.

I know for a fact that a high pitch noise is producable via the circuit itself, especially with cheaper components, but I don't know why exactly.

Why do you doubt the fan is the culprit? I know that the curcuits can buzz, it has to do with the magnetic fields causing the board to expand and contract, but to me, the fan seems the more likely culprit.

Add one more believer to the "revving fans" theory.

btw - What kind of GPU temps are you getting when you're playing games?

This card uses considerable amounts of power. It also uses power in a non linear fashion. Such loads tend to be complex in nature often causing the generation of subharmonic oscillatory currents within the LC section of the delivery circuits. Often components such as capacitors and inductors can be brought into a state where the subharmonic frequencies are in the audible range. This is the chirping, squealing, hissing, and whistling noises you are hearing.

Synopsis: you're hearing the artifacts from inductor sing. Can you do anything about it? Not really.

As I said. OR he's hearing fan noise. They sound almost exactly the same. BTW, what is LC section?

LC = inductor-capacitor network.

The noise is VERY different from a fan unless something is really weird going on with the fan. 5800 ultra users excluded. (those fans had drivers that made them squeal horribly)

I had a 5900 and 5950 that both made very loud noises. Dib blit acceleration loads augmented the effect quite noticeably. In 3DMark2003 the airplane scene where the FPS goes well over 1000 made the card sound like it was going to fly out of the slot! In a pc sitting on the desk with the side cover off it was very noticeable. 6800 series cards (I had both GT and Ultra models) really didn't make too much noise.

I say that the sound of bearings going bad, especially due to mechanical wear, is very similar to capacitor squell. And yes, 5800 series had weirdo issues.

Its not the fan, well in my case it isn't. It happens once in awhile , but only during games and stuff and the instant i leave, it stops. i can tell its not the fan since i have none with my zalman. I don't know what it is but its clearly coming from the vid card and it could be a sign of something bad or just a bad/drying component being stressed.

I knew I wasn't making it up

actually, whats your powersupply and how old is it, i had an old enermax that used to do the same thing when i booted the comp and started playing games, the longer i played games, the louder the noise got.
