Noise-cancellation headphones?

Reasonable quality, relatively portable ones, for not too much money?

There is a Sennheiser I believe, and a Bose, but the Bose as always seems overpriced. Anybody have any experience with these?

I like watching DVDs or listening to music on the plane with my laptop, but the engine noise is very irritating, esp. if I'm sitting at the back.

I have a pair of these

I commute via transit to school (and work), and I like to listen to music in the compter lab... I can have these cranked and no one
can hear a thing. The sound from these cans are very good. They sort of have an exagerated bass response (because they are a
closed design) but that's ok because I don't listen to music that already has exagerated bass. They are also very comfortable for
long listening periods.

If that's too pricey I've heard many reccomendations go to Koss for cheap sealed headphones.

Ack! I just noticed you meant noise canceling... Let's just say that I can sit on the back of a noisy bus, and the engine noise
doesn't bother me... of course comparing a bus to a jet is rather silly :p

I found a "hot deal" on a pair of Maxell noise cancelling headphones over in AT's HD forum, for $20. Worst $20 I ever spent. They were junk, and only lasted a few weeks. I should have returned them, but I never got around to it - My fault.

I ended up paying about $80 on a decent pair of Sonys. I've very happy with them - Quite comfortable, and work amazingly well - I'll never fly without them, that's for certain. A friend has the Brookstone version, and he's pretty happy with them, too, but I never tried them to compare to the Sonys.

In other words, you get what you pay for. Definitely not something to order via the Internet, unless you know EXACTLY the set you want. Go to aB&M store and take 'em for a test drive. Be sure to walk outside while wearing them and see how they do dampening the noise of the cars driving past - That should be pretty simple.

definitely get Etymotic ER-4P or 4s headphones. They are the 'earbud' type and block out a ton of noise. They are pretty expensive, about $200 used up to $300 new for a pair, but worth it - some of the best sounding headphones you can get.

im a huge fan of koss headphones... excellent quality, and the lifetime warranty is a huge plus (not sure if its for everyone... i live 10 minutes away from the world headquarters, so they fix em for free), ive broken mine like 6 times.

my freshman year roomate went and bought a pair of $100+ sony's dont know which it had some noice cancel feature which basically emitted a drone or something that was supposed to cancel out the outer noice but STUPID you could hear that DRONE

just get something cinaural (i think thats what they're called) instead of supraural meaning CLOSED headphones instead of OPEN

dont be dumb like him

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm considering the Sennheisers, but haven't decided yet. The Bose is rated as the same or worse as the Sennheisers, but for twice the price. The higher end Sonys are an option.

I'm not as interested in the closed headphones (too bulky for travel and they usually make my head hurt :p), and the in-the-ear-canal headphones like the Etys because they're too expensive and I don't like having stuff in my ears. I don't really want to block everything around me either, just the engine noise of the plane.

I've flown with ANR Bose aviation headsets, and while I don't know how they compare, they were very comfortable, and good at doing their job.

Eug,

I fly coast to coast every week for the past year and a half (Philly to LA) and I must say the bose noise cancelling headphones are the best. I have purchased the Sony ones(NC20) and they were a complete waste of 150 dollars. I've used the Sennheisers and they are so-so, but not the most comfortable headphones on the ear. If you plan on spending a lot of time on the plane I would get the BOSE ones. I sit with several frequent fliers on my flight and they all own the bose noise cancelling headphones. No doubt you will appreciate them especially on red eye flights if you need to catch some Z's.
