im looking into getting some noise canceling headphones for college- my moms willing to buy them for me (easier to study if its quiet:D), so price isnt as much of an issue as it would be if i had to pay for them.

ive tried the bose quiet comfort ones, and they seem to really work- i know theyre way overpriced for the sound quality, but im more interested in the noise canceling technology than the sound quality. and im not paying for them. whats my best bet?

get enclosed cans.

such as sennheiser HD-280 pros

they keep you from hearing just about anything and they arent "noise canceling" they are just completely isolated.

If you want silence, try earmuffs or something. Stuffing paper in your ears might works as well. :)

I got the Bose non-noise cancelling headphones... the $150 ones, and I think they're amazing. Can barely hear anything around you when you have soft music playing and very comfortable. I hate that eerie feeling you get with the noise cancelling headphones. I like to be able to hear just enough not to distract me =)

Get a decent pair of canal phones.

Don't waste your money on active cancellation, high isolation + quality sound is better all around.

Just buy the Bose and be done with it. Your mind will tell you that they work even though they don't simply because you spent so much damned money on them.

i have them they work quite well as isolating say in a library. i can even hear music over the roar of a small jet (while flying)

edit: i havent tried many canal phones, they might be even better at isolating if you are willing to put up with the extra hassle and discomfort.

Wow, you wasted about $100! $150 for Bose headphones.... man some people don't do research. You could have gotten Shure e3c's for that or saved $50 and gotten e2cs which are about as good as it gets for "low end" buds.

That pretty much sums it up. Sealed cans or buds can do the trick for the isolation.

Heck, just go to www.headphone.com and start reading

I've tried them all. I travel about 200k miles a year on planes so I definitely get the mileage out of the headphones. If you plan on using it often then get the bose headsets. There really is nothing that comes close to it. They are comfortable and great on flights.
