Noise Cancelation for Fan

BurnItDwn

Lifer

Does anyonw know at all if there is any sort of Device that i can put near, on the side of my case near a blowhole with a 120mm Fan to make make a sound wave that would counteract the soundwave that the fan makes ... thus making it quiet ??

I know this is probably not going to get me any results ...

but i know it can be done with some kind of digital signal processing

or is there a simple way to make one ??

is there a hard way to make one ... and a link to a faq maybe ??

any help at all would be greatly appreceated

thanks

Invest in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Good for more than just the computer.

Have annoying kids? Pets? Concubines?

Enjoy peace & quiet. Now if only they weren't so damned expensive...

If you want cheap, buy some earplugs! Problem solved!

If you want to drop some dough though, get some of those Etymolics ear canal earphones. They actually fit inside your ear canal (as opposed to ear buds that sit right in front of the canal) and deliver music, sound, whatever to your ears while blocking out all external noise. Plus they sound fantastic. Arguably the best in-ear phones out there. But, they're pricey ($200 I think).

hmmm ... thought about the headphones ... but i was hoping for something that i could use to make or buy to actively cancel the frequencies that the fan makes .. and not use headphones ...

that way if i want to watch a dvd with a bunch of friends or something like that ... i wont have to blast the volume too loud to drown out the fan noise ...

if this does not exist ... then the noise cancelling headphones may be a good idea .. i heard makes something like that .. you know if they are any good ?

What you really need, then, is to join the ranks of us who like their computers quiet AND fast. Like me. 🙂

The loudest things in my case by FAR are the two 7200 RPM HD's that I have. As soon as I find the money, they'll be replaced by one large drive enclosed in a silentdrive enclosure. My CPU fan is rated at around 25 dba, my two case fans are each rated at ~20 dba. Makes for a very quiet case, & that's without going the full distance of DynaMat, etc.

Start out here for some ideas.

Who? I know Sony makes some decent ones.

I don't think noise cancellation works unless it's in headphone form. See, there must be a microphone to pick up the noise, and then a processor inverts the wave to produce the white noise cancellation wave.

But if the cancellation wave were being output by a speaker, I would think that the microphone would pick it up and therefore wouldn't be able to produce the correct cancellation sound wave.

Does that make any sense? Maybe it's possible, but if it were I think we'd be seeing them everywhere.

that does make sense ...

but i know there has to be some kind of an audiophile thats good with DSP stuff ... that may know how this can be done ...

well thanks for the advice

would placing some kind of accoustic panel about 1 foot away from it maybe dim the sound by a substantial amount ???

or it would not be enough to make a difference?

hmm..

is there some kind of case enclosure? i could put my comp inside a big box of some sort and keep the sound in. would that work? or i could just do the acoustic paneling and divert the sound somewhere else.

hmmm i have constructed a temporary fix for it at least ...

i used an old cardboard box ... a 5.25inch floppy drive ... and electrical tape ..

its now reduced to about 1/2 as loud ...

the box is about 8 inches square ... but about 2 and 1/2 inches deep ...

I ripped out enough of one side of the box to totally fit the 120mm fan hole

i then used that cardboard to roll circles about 2 and 1/2 inches in diameter ..

I then taped the 3 cardboard rolls inside the box ... from the bottom to the top ... and placed the box directly next to the csae ... all the inflow air comes from the front through the rolls into the case
Instead of attaching this makeshift cooler to the Case ... i just put it between my desk end ... and the Case ... and on top of a 5.25 inch floppy drive ... (which lines the cut out part up real good to the fan ...

.. it drowns out about 1/3 or 1/4 of the sound ... and i dont think it hurts the airflow ... probably it actually helps it since all the air is coming from the front ... which is where i want it to come from.

i think most of the rest of the sound is coming from the inside of the case now .. which would be difficult to damp ... unless i put some kind of accoustic muffler inside ...

any ideas ???

or i should stick with my first idea .... or the headphones ???

thanks ... (or i am too anal about this with my one track mind?)

I just thought of another possible idea ... and i need an opinion if it would work or not ..

record the fan ... open up soundforge or cool edit ... flange it just so its the exact oposite as the real sound ... (or use environmental effects in sblive software) ... and then loop it as a wav file to use my speakers to cancel out the sound ???

im sure something like that would use up less then 1% of CPU ... and it would use very little ram to run ...

but would it work ??? or its something silly ??
