Noise: 5850 vs a 690

I have a 5850 in my system right now and desperately need to upgrade my graphics card as I've switched to a 1600p monitor last year. Noise is a pretty big issue for me. Looking at Anand's 2009 review of the 5850, it showed a floor of 46.6db at idle and a floor of 56.6 under load. Anand's review of the 690 has it at 40.9 at idle and 55.8 under load. Can I assume that Anand used the same methodology 2.5 years ago for the 5850 as the 690 a few weeks ago? Can the 690 actually be quieter than the 5850?

If you're willing to pay $1000+ for a video card, I'd sure hope that thing is as silent as a feather. I would imagine the 690 is fairly quiet though considering it's build quality. Here's a clip from Anand's article:

"The GTX 690 OC meanwhile approaches the noise level of the GTX 680 SLI under Metro, and shoots past it under OCCT. Considering the performance payoff some users will no doubt find this worth the noise, but it should be clear that overclocking like this means sacrificing the stock GTX 690’s quietness."

From that tidbit, I'd imagine the 690 is fairly quiet under stock conditions.

The single fan on the GTX 690 is too small. I don't know what nVidia was thinking. Forget about aftermarket cooling to fix it as well. All you could do would be to put it under water.
