New IVB build. Just need to order a cooler.

Was thinking of just getting a noctua based on its reputation, and the fact that noctua will support new platforms in the future (haswell).

My goal is to get at least 4.5ghz out of my 3570k, but id like to get as high as possible.

I was almost just gonna order a h212 evo, and then put another fan on it, but then id be in so much, i might as well spend 80 and get the best.

thoughts?

Also, is this an older version: http://www.directron.com/nhd14.html
they dont list 1155 as supported. I also see neweggs got 2 listed, and one is cheaper than the other: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...rder=BESTMATCH

After 4.5 really won't matter to you, both from benches and heat. Read heat as in all caps. Ivy Bridge doesn't care about whether you're on stock, Megahalems or full loop. 22nm is HOT. Go with the 212.

As high as possible without water is something akin to the D-14 plus Indigo Xtreme. I would think 4.7 is possible as a daily OC.

This gentleman was able to get it to 4.8 and confirm stability, although it was too hot for my liking.

4.7 looks a lot better, and during daily use, I doubt you'll see it get into the 70s that much. Having the voltage under 1.25 also would make me sleep better at night.

This is my first time hearing about the indigo extreme, how easy and practical is the application? And then what about if you need to take off heatsink?

Seems a little extreme for me, i mean i do want to go as high as i can, but by the easiest means, so maybe i should re-phrase that to, i want to go decently high.

If the how much of a difference in max clock speed can i expect between the 212 and the noctua? assuming they are the same temp (eg comforable temp on 212 = 4.4ghz, and that same temp with the noctua at 4.6ghz?)

I have all my parts coming except for the heatsink, so id like to order tomorrow if possible, so i can build this weekend.

So for me, who would be happy with decent temps at 4.5ghz, should i just get the 212 evo, and then maybe attach another fan to help out? Or should i get something else that is in the 30-50 dollar range? Anything above that and i think ill just spend 80 on the noctua, even if its overkill.

You might be able to get to 4.5 without need to overlvolt almost at all, which, in that case, you can get whatever. The D14 isn't going to give you a 500 Mhz advantage. I would say 100-200 at most. Indigo Xtreme just helps you a little more.

As far as indigo xtreme goes, I too was nervous about installing it and taking it through the "reflow procedure", but after it was done, I was like, "That's it?". I found it to be pretty painless. As far as it coming off, no idea as I haven't removed mine :).

Hmmm, well still pretty sure im gonna go with the noctua cooler, since i would be spending $35 for 212 evo and another ~$15 for another fan to attach, so i might as well splurge and get it. At best itll give me lower temps at the same frequency.

Im gonna look into the indigo extreme. Ive always just used AS5 and not even thought about it.

That would make no sense. Push-pull will only make more noise and not really improve performance by more than a degree or two. The fin area and mass of the heatsink is far more important when you already have one fan - which is why I recommended the Hyper 612 PWM in your other thread. It's nearly twice as massive as 212 Evo. But since you already have a 212+, you don't even need a new cooler. 212+ performs identically to 212 Evo.

Noctua D14 is not worth it. Just think about it - a hundred MHz here or there is not worth another $40 over a 612 PWM. You will never notice the difference in performance.

AS5 is inferior to Noctua's own NT-H1 which is supplied with D14. You will be fine with whatever comes with the heatsink.

go with the NH-D14 imo, it's as good as air cooling gets and it's so damned quiet.

plus if I rememer correctly Noctua will send you a free mounting bracket for every new socket that comes out, which in my book is a huge plus.

If you want something freaking mighty then get the hr-02 macho or ts 140 if you case is large enough. Absolutely massive but great for the price of 40 +10 in shipping.
