What memory is small enough to work? And... Does your memory have heat sinking?

Hi!

There is only one standard height for RAM memory modules. It is governed by an international standard similar to other components. The problem with memory is that some heatsinks have those tall heatsinks that look like combs. Those tall heatsinks exceed the standard height for memory modules. The manufacturers often claim the tall heat 0inks help cool the memory. That is not always correct. Under the best circumstances the additional cooling is marginal. Typically they don't contribute much of anything to memory cooling.

The Noctua D14 just happens to be my favorite cpu heatsinkl. I have used the D14 for several builds and I have one installed in my personal case mod project. I installed Corsair Vengeance LPX memory. The memory is a standard height module with standard height heatsinks that do not interfere with the D14. To be fair I must mention there are many other standard height memory modules offered by other companies that will work with the D14.

In a typical desktop system one of the D14 fans will be located just above the two memory modules closest to the cpu. That is okay. You can easily adjust the height of the fan simply by moving the fan mounting clips.

Good Luck!

Standard height for DDR4 DIMMs is 31.25mm (DDR3 is a bit lower at 30.35mm)
My Kingston HyperX DDR4 modules come with a small heatsink and measure 34.6mm in height.

After being mounted, Noctua D14 still has ~15mm of clearance over the HyperX modules in a LGA 1151 (Skylake) motherboard.

Conclusion? The NH D14 is compatible with the majority of memory modules available on the market, with the sole exception of those using very big heatsinks that take their height over 45mm and close to 50mm. This means you can easily use something like Crucial Ballistix Elite (~40mm) or Kingston HyperX Predator (42.2mm) but you cannot use Corsair Dominator at 55mm in height.
