"Nobody likes Romney."

funny quote I read in a NYTimes article tonight...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01...politics/05repubs.html

Complicating Mr. Romney?s life even more, Mr. Huckabee?s campaign manager, Ed Rollins, suggested he was entering something of a temporary alliance of interest with Mr. McCain against Mr. Romney. Mr. Rollins said Mr. Huckabee would be using the next several days to present what he said would be an unfavorable comparison of their records as governor.

?We?re going to see if we can?t take Romney out,? Mr. Rollins said. ?We like John. Nobody likes Romney.?

Mr. McCain?s advisers said they did not view Mr. Huckabee as a particular threat here.

how would our resident conservatives feel about a McCain/Huckabee ticket?

McCain's probably the only republican that I could see myself potentially voting for... I'd definitely vote for him over Hillary or Edwards, though if it were Obama v McCain, it'd probably boil down to who their runningmates were and what the congressional races were looking like. but maybe I'm the only one who can forgive him his trespasses and assume that he's genuine on most of his positions (and certainly moreso than the other Republican front-runners).

of course, Huckabee could go for the gold, but personally, I think it's unlikely. he's got a more than decent chance at winning South Carolina, but at some point, Republicans will have to accept the fact that he'd face a fierce election and his record as governor is a major weakness... Obama could very well pull the younger evangelical vote and the older establishment could take a look at his tax record and just stay home.

according to the last polls I've seen, every republican is projected to lose to almost every democrat at this point, but the margin seems to be tightest when McCain is involved.

if anyone other than Rudy wants to win the nomination, the Republicans really need to narrow down their field to a 2-man race before Super Tuesday... otherwise Rudy's strategic gamble will pay off and he can use his name recognition / cash to pull-out an electoral victory if there's no momentum-riding front-runner before then.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

Also, the guys face is unnaturally tight.

I have no problem with Mitt. Quite frankly he's too much of a cleanup job for most people. But that is exactly what will happen when he wins.

Huckabee is a shyster. You might as well call him and his supporters the Clinton Right.

Huckabee will be George W. Bush II, the Sequel. And Romney is just another jackass. The Fact that religious conservatives in Iowa have given Huckabee credibility is mind blowing. Those people need to come out of the corn fields and see the world as it is.

The point being that Romney is the best example of the GOP problem and also the biggest victim of catch 08. To win the white house for the GOP requires winning the so called religious right. In recent years its become a don't leave home without it because turning out that religious right base in enthusiastic numbers is a must have or the GOP loses. It just that simple. Once the RR appeal is secured, then the candidate can reach out to the other tradition GOP base of white male fiscal conservative strong military and have two good legs to stand on.

And into that calculus comes Mitt Romney who looked into his mirror and saw a President of the United States. He has all the basic necessities, a good pedigree as the son of GOP politician, good looks, wealth, a political record of a winner, with energy and youth. But the little delusion in the mirror gets really fussy real fast when viewed by the religious right. Who looks at the Romney record as a semi liberal governor of Massachusetts who triple gasp allowed abortion on his watch without at least remembering to be morally opposed at the time.

And Mitt realized it was time to totally reinvent himself and made a botch of it. To start out, being born again is a luxury permitted in other protestant sects, but Mormons just don't fit. Then he became a laughing stock when he tried to buy his National Rifle Association card life membership. And Romney has no national record as a GOP thinker in Washington able to lead the nation to a strong defense. But Mitt has money and Huckabee has none. And when we see Huckabee trounce Romney after he tried to buy Iowa, we are seeing that Romney has failed in his reinvent himself effort to appeal to the religious right. And now off to New Hampshire where Romney must try to sell his other leg as a strong national leader and McCain is likely to eat his lunch there. And then the huge danger is that Romney will be seen as appealing to no one and may have to give up.

Quite Frankly I think Romney would have been better off running on his record of an Eastern blue state governor able to compete with dems with good GOP values and then he could knock off Giuliani who is arguable even more phony than Romney. And Giuliani is only doing well because he is the only moderate in the GOP race, but is going to have to face some tough questions on bad decisions over his signature issue of 911.

But bottom line, Romney has failed to sell himself to the religious right. They know a phony when they see one. And when Giuliani with his piss poor family record and a pro abortion stance sells better to Pat Robertson, we see just how much the phoniness is hurting Mitt.

To get elected President in the US as a member of the GOP, you have to have both the fiscal conservatives, and social/religious conservatives supporting you. Each group alone cannot best a democrat.

Huckabee is George Bush 2.0, Romney won't take a stand on anything (much like Hillary), and McCain is just getting too damn old.

No, because Romney has spent a great deal of time there. 2 or 3 of his sons have as well.

Most of the candidates have ignored Wyoming.

He won Wyoming because he is Mormon, I predict the same thing for Idaho and Utah.

That feels quite close. I feel like his real reason for running is all about him and nothing about me.

I think Kucinich and Paul are probably the only candidates that are running for the betterment of the people.

Is Kucinich still running? He has dropped out? He must have, he's not in the debate.

ABC cut him from the debate. He filed suit but, the equal time clause doesnt apply to the primaries since they are run by the parties not the govt.

Hes still running. He didnt run in Iowa, or NH, hes taken the Giuliani approach. Hes spending what little money he has on Super Tuesday. Hell be done after super tuesday.

Kucinich gave a good speech Friday night at the state democratic dinner in New Hampshire. I was really surprised. He really had no supporters there but by the end of his speech, he had everyone cheering. He was also jumping up and down like a maniac. BTW, his wife is uber hot :).
