funny quote I read in a NYTimes article tonight...
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01...politics/05repubs.html
how would our resident conservatives feel about a McCain/Huckabee ticket?
McCain's probably the only republican that I could see myself potentially voting for... I'd definitely vote for him over Hillary or Edwards, though if it were Obama v McCain, it'd probably boil down to who their runningmates were and what the congressional races were looking like. but maybe I'm the only one who can forgive him his trespasses and assume that he's genuine on most of his positions (and certainly moreso than the other Republican front-runners).
of course, Huckabee could go for the gold, but personally, I think it's unlikely. he's got a more than decent chance at winning South Carolina, but at some point, Republicans will have to accept the fact that he'd face a fierce election and his record as governor is a major weakness... Obama could very well pull the younger evangelical vote and the older establishment could take a look at his tax record and just stay home.
according to the last polls I've seen, every republican is projected to lose to almost every democrat at this point, but the margin seems to be tightest when McCain is involved.
if anyone other than Rudy wants to win the nomination, the Republicans really need to narrow down their field to a 2-man race before Super Tuesday... otherwise Rudy's strategic gamble will pay off and he can use his name recognition / cash to pull-out an electoral victory if there's no momentum-riding front-runner before then.

Complicating Mr. Romney?s life even more, Mr. Huckabee?s campaign manager, Ed Rollins, suggested he was entering something of a temporary alliance of interest with Mr. McCain against Mr. Romney. Mr. Rollins said Mr. Huckabee would be using the next several days to present what he said would be an unfavorable comparison of their records as governor.
?We?re going to see if we can?t take Romney out,? Mr. Rollins said. ?We like John. Nobody likes Romney.?
Mr. McCain?s advisers said they did not view Mr. Huckabee as a particular threat here.
