As an avid well-watcher, I've noticed that not many people seem to be falling down wells anymore. A Google News search seems to confirm my theory that humans may have finally conquered the scourge of dangerous open wells, much in the way we virtually eliminated malaria and smallpox. Kudos, fellow primates.
Seriously for a minute though, does anyone remember all the news stories in the late eighties or early nineties about kids falling down wells? There were at least two summers where the media was absolutely obsessed with kids down wells. The governor would usually step in and order special well-fighting equipment in from the other side of the country to get the child out in time. How weird that we never anything like this these days.
