I know 'Bowling for Columbine' is not an impartial nor completely accurant documentary. And for puporting it be such, shame on you, Michael Moore. But that's not the point of this thread.

I do thank Moore for one thing within his piece, that of fear-based news reporting. I never thought about it, but I see it all the time. Look now (around 2 PM) at the CNN site.

Headline: Flu season spreads sickness, fear

snippet:
Widespread outbreaks already have been reported in at least 13 states, but federal health officials say this year's flu season has not yet peaked and vaccine supplies are running low. Some schools have canceled classes because so many students are out with the flu and a hospital emergency room in Liberty, Missouri, closed it doors because of the crowd of new patients. Health authorities in Colorado report nine children have died of flu-like illnesses.

We have the flu all the time. Every year. Last is sucked, because I got sick for the first time in like 12 years. And it hurt too, like someone grabbing me by the throat. This year I've missed it (so far). But OMG!!!!! There is no more vaccine!!!! (well, there still is in the pipeline and the more expensive spray is still being made). Makes me mad that they sell ad time with these salacious comments.

:frown:

I don't see the riot-inducing rhetoric. "vaccine supplies are running low." Truthful reporting, no?

The doctors' office where I take my girls is out of the flu shots, themselves.

this year's strain is particularly potent. in fact, there are already a number of deaths attributed to it.

therefore, the fact that vaccines are running low would be newsworthy and cause for concern, imo

Have you missed it in the news that some people, mainly children, are dying from this flu?

flu shots? Stop being a pansy! I eat the flu for breakfast, then it makes me vomit itself up within the hour!

CNN is king for posting stupid articles. Not that this necessarily is one, but that heading with the picture is over the top, no doubt.

The regular news media is doing their part, audio clips on the radio last night of a woman wailing, "Why!? This is 2004, not 1900 (Yes, she had the year wrong in the clip I heard) why did my baby have to die to the flu, why can't we do something about it?"

Fear has been one of the most successful marketing tactics of all time. Anyone remember shortly after 9/11 the ads on tv for your own radiation kit in the case of a nuclear attack. Fear is a marketing tactic that is effective against all people.

Anyone want to bet that the flu deaths this year will be about the same as the last several years, the only thing different being the death by death reporting of the news media?

Blah blah blah..

Just like the shark attack year. Sharks attack people every year and that year really wasnt anything special. The media just saw people were interested and ran with it.

Are you guys failing to realize that the main strain that is causing a lot of these deaths and sicknesses is not a strain that was included in this years flu shot?!?! Both of my parents got flu shots, and a few weeks later they both got the flu - they contracted the Fijian strain.

Yes, children and old folks are most susceptiple to the flu. And they die. But this is not the pandemic flu of 10 or 20 years ago. It is not SARS. And some agencies are looking into the deaths as something else too.. And the vaccine does not cover this strain that is speading, but three others.

But my original point is still this, is this flu spreading "fear?" I'm speaking figuratively, of course. I see the news shows in the morning and I see that they start off with the unsubstantiated or wildly opinionated exposition (what they say personally as they riff on the facts.)

I guess that's why I watch the News Hour on PBS or watch BBC America.

Oh, the major media also forgot to mention that most (possibly all, will have to find the article again) of the children in Colorado that died already had their immune systems compromised due to HIV or other factors.

Hmm. My browser seems to be on the fritz again. Evertime I try to see the site, it keeps resolving to only one USAToday article.

Don't we have a few people on ATOT who work for the CDC? Why not ask them what's true and what's sensationalist media BS?

Yeah, I laughed and said "I'm probably dead anyway" and went on with life.

This happens every fvcking year.

The news really overhypes the flu season.

Also the biggest reason the flu shots are running low is cause of the media hype.
