No wonder my bus wouldn't do over 70...

Ok, I did know about this. But it's still surprising to see it in person.

Sunk Valve

What else was bad?
Blocked cooling 1
Blocked cooling 2

Now consider: If the gunk in the fins was blocking 15% of the cooling surface (actually probably more when you consider the cooling air was blocked from reaching other places as well), and ran for at least 2 years, how long do you think a regular car with a radiator would run with that much blocked off for 2 years? That's also not counting the old spark plug and spark plug socket I found resting comfortably above the #1 cylinder.

What's funny is my bus is a 73 and came stock with a 1.7L engine. So I had a spare 1.7 head ready to go in. But what do I find when I pull the head off? A 2.0L. D'oh! Luckily I was at a friend's house who happened to have a spare 2.0 in his garage so I borrowed a head from him.

Tomorrow I'll hopefully get to finish putting the heat exchangers and carbs on, assuming this friggin flu passes...

Your friend just happened to have a 2.0L head for a 1970s VW Bus? :confused:

BTW: How many miles do you have on that bus?

Heh, hopefully those are the only problems the engine has....

Sure he would if he was an enthusiast. You would be surprised at the Mustang and other general car parts I could pull out at 2 in the morning to save your day.

With the right tires and Koni shocks? No problem.

The great thing is looking at peoples' expressions when I pass them. :lol;

I can only wait for that day. Looks like I might have to put off getting a bus for yet another year. I still stop by Al Bugs Me in Fort Collins every time we head out to Denver, though :p

I'm surprised a Microbus in perfect shape could even get to 70. :p Seriously though, they have the aerodynamics of a barn door and about 95 hp. Durable as all hell though.

I got the bum engine in my Super Beetle... if I'm to trust the Chilton's listing based on engine codes, I got the 40HP version. I doubt it'll do 70, I've never tried :p
