Ok, I did know about this. But it's still surprising to see it in person.
Sunk Valve
What else was bad?
Blocked cooling 1
Blocked cooling 2
Now consider: If the gunk in the fins was blocking 15% of the cooling surface (actually probably more when you consider the cooling air was blocked from reaching other places as well), and ran for at least 2 years, how long do you think a regular car with a radiator would run with that much blocked off for 2 years? That's also not counting the old spark plug and spark plug socket I found resting comfortably above the #1 cylinder.
What's funny is my bus is a 73 and came stock with a 1.7L engine. So I had a spare 1.7 head ready to go in. But what do I find when I pull the head off? A 2.0L. D'oh! Luckily I was at a friend's house who happened to have a spare 2.0 in his garage so I borrowed a head from him.
Tomorrow I'll hopefully get to finish putting the heat exchangers and carbs on, assuming this friggin flu passes...
