cuz Volari will be $449, though choice between that and 9800 XT or a $200 5900

from digitimes:

In a December 12 article, we mistakenly reported the V8 Volari Duo chip from XGI Technology as being priced at about US$330. The ASP of graphics cards based on the chip is US$449.

so has anyone seen the V8 duo IN STORES AT THIS PRICE? Or are we going to believe the internet like we always do (of course the internet is never wrong)...

3 possibilities here:

1. V8 duo got better and the price is justified
2. V8 duo is the same as early previews and the price is wrong
3. V8 duo is the same as early previews and the price is right and XGI is dumb

I guess there is a "4. V8 duo got better and the price is wrong" but that seems very unlikely for both to happen so I didn't include it ;)

Rogo, you've gone off the deep end.
1. First you start talking about how you're using a 9800XT and a 5950 (or was it a 5900U and a 9800P) at home, when you used to have a 9800NU and complained your taxes wouldn't allow you to upgrade
2. Then you start talkign about all the PCs you build for "clients" in your "coffee shop"
3. Now you say you sell Volaris that AFAIK aren't even available at some grotesque price
4. You used to say your wife wouldn't let you buy parts, now you're divorced

Seems fishy to me.

Too expensive and too slow. It's the reincarnation of the Parhelia.
You can't really disrespect Matrox like that BFG. I mean, this is SIS/Trident we're talking about, Matrox deserves better.

Rollo

I was joking about the $600xgi (I had a :p) at the end to indicate tounge-incheek.

I'm not divorced either-just a temporary seperation.

I have a little computer buisness on the side : "mainframe PC" because I though it would be nice for my hobby to produce some capital.

But I am going off the deep end a bit these days.

Rollo I was sure it was you with the 5900 ultra in your "main" and a 9800pro that just did not cut it?

9700P>5800NU>9800P this year. I've never tried a 5900U, they were too overpriced at launch to bother with.

Have these people ever taken a business class? You cant enter a market and expect to go anywhere when you cost more than the established market leaders.

If these prices are true we can forget that company. From the performance I have seen it should be placed around 200 bucks to compete with the 5900 NU.

They need some Gainward-esque nomenclature to justify those high prices, like "XGI Volari Golden Phoenix Warrior Ultra Pack X666".

I was wrong, sorry. Get confused with so many people here owning every video card ever produced ... So do you notice much difference in actual usage between those 3 cards.

You would think that if neither basic common sense nor economics were enough that they would learn from 3dfx's mistake a few years back with that awful multi-chip monstrosity -to wit: two big slow hot expensive chips do not equal a single well designed one. Maybe it's okay for specialized custom military simulation gear where cost and size is not an issue, but not consumer PC gaming. You've gotta make a competitive single chip first, otherwise it only has inherent disadvantages.

Not a huge amount, no. The 9800 Pro is obviously faster than the 5800NU at AA/AF, even when I ran the 5800 at Ultra speeds. These days I mainly play UT2003, and I'm not even using AA/AF. It just seems to "feel" slower with the 4X8X on, even though the frames are still good. (especially in heated battles)
