No wonder french Cruller >> all other donuts

when i first had a french Cruller, i thought it was the best donut ever made.
but i had no idea what made it taste so good. it seemed like a regular donut twisted in an odd shape with icing on top.

apparently, it's made with a different type of Dough

Uhh, no. They taste like crap. They don't even taste close to what a real glazed doughnut should taste like. And that's like the easiest type to make. And they screw that up.

You need to find a REAL bakery and have REAL doughnuts. Not this crap you get at the supermarket or Krispy Kreme or Winchells or that crap.

Add me to the list of people who simply don't get it. The bakery at the grocery store makes just as good (if not better) doughnuts as KK, yet people go nuts over KK doughnuts.

Chill out. It's just for the "Kruller". Dunkin Donuts is way better for other doughnuts, although we don't have one right now. If you want the best doughnuts, make them yourself. Good Eats also did an episode on choux pastries I believe.

I learned this last summer when my favorite bakery decided to drop the Crullers because they couldn't get that kind of dough anymore.

Seems they make everything else from scratch but couldn't justify making small batches for the low selling Crullers.

Bummer!

They came to Canada but did not last long. I think they are only in gas stations now.

Agree. Krispy Kreme is down there with Enteman's for not good donuts. Finding a good donut shop is hard work (not that I imbibe anymore). Last bakeries I knew of that could make good donuts were in Frankfort, KY and Buena Vista, CO. The Frankfort donuts were heavy cake donuts full of flavor and good fillings and glazes. The Buena Vista donuts were fried in lard and tasted like bacon.

Cruller is my fav. I also think KK is over rated. The glazed are ok, hot only of course, but going to a regular quality doughnut shop and getting a glazed thats just as hot and fresh as KK will yield the better doughnut. KK's are small and overpriced also.
