No visible filesystems on a USB flash drive

A friend of mine has a flash drive that is recognized by Windows, but no longer has any visible filesystems and no drive information (like size and free space) visible in Windows. Any good suggestions for saving data off of this without resorting to the serious $$$ for a professional data recovery service?
