Hi,

I currently have a AMD 2400+ in a ShuttleX using an ATI Radeon 9600 w/ 1GB of ram. it's running Windows Server 2003.

For some reason, my xvid/divx files won't play. there's audio, just no video. DVD and MPGs play fine.

I've tried multiple players including:
Windows Media Player 9
Windows Media Player 6.4
Videolan VLC 7.2
Media Player Classic

I've tried both the original divx and xvid codecs and the ffdshow codecs, which neither work.

I've have read that in order to play video, i had to set my video hardware acceleration to full, but when i check, it's already at full.

i also read something about overlaying and reseting it, but i was unable to find out where to do so. my overlay tab in display properties -> settings -> advance, didnt really have much options i can tweak.

i do however notice, when i turn on thumbnail mode in windows explorer, the little picture shown is actually correct (has the correct beginning image).

if anyone knows how i can fix this problem, please help me. much appreciation!

forgot to mention, before when i was using windows xp, divx / xvid videos played fine.

Why are you watching videos on a server?

it's not really a server. uc berkeley provides microsoft software including operating systems free to cs students and i just wanted to try it out. it's been great so far besides the fact xvid and divx files won't play.

Well, since it's a server OS, it's not really designed to run multimedia applications from the desktop. Here's a good guide to converting your 2003 server into a viable workstation. You probably need to enable DirectX in order to watch videos.

i did infact look at your guide and have followed every step in the graphics acceleration. was there anything else i had to do from there?

i do notice in VLC, when i disable overlay mode, the video does infact play.
