No Video Signal

Hello all. My first post here.

I just finished my new build of my machine. Here are the specs:

Mobo: ASUS P5N-E SLI 650 SLI
Memory: (2x1GB) PC4200 DDR2 533MHz
Case: Cooler Master Elite 330 Black ATX RoHS Case
Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W
Cooler: ASUS P5M2-8SB4W 80mm SuperFlo
Vid Card: eVGA 8800GT SSC Edition

Here's the problem. Originally, my friend helped me hook this machine up and we got the to the BIOS screen, but my PSU was inadequate, so it kept on freezing on us. I order the above 700W power supply and now, there's "No Video Signal" on my screen for about 5 seconds and the screen goes black (like it's turning off) and the power light goes orange (instead of green).

QUICK EDIT: When I turn on the machine, I get no beeps. All fans, lights, etc fire up like it's fine, but no video signal on the monitor.

Here's what I've tried:

(1) Reseating the video card.
(2) Rechecking and reseating all power cables.
(3) Used my old ATI card in the system to see if the VGA was fried. The ATI card didn't get a video signal either. Makes me think it's not the video card.

What else can I try?

Try installing a processor... :p

Sorry, and Welcome to Anandtech Forums!

Do you see the BIOS screen now?

Have you connected the PCI-E power connector on the videocard?

That's it! :p

No, I have a processor. It's a P4 3.00 GhZ Pent D. Crappy one, but it's still in there and still works.

No, no BIOS screen. The vid card is plugged into the PSU using the plug labeled PCI-E 1. It's a 6-pin plug.

Yes, I have the 20+4 pin in place.

Also, the 12v connector is the 6-prong plug, correct? if so, then yes, it's in place.

12v connector is 4 pin. It should plug in very close to the CPU, as it provides direct power to it.

Ah yes, I have that plugged in as well. Tight spot, but yes, it's in.

I have teh OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W PSU. Anyone else have this? I can't seem to find a 230/115 switch on it. I wanted to check to make sure it was at 115.

Something else I just thought of:

Does the ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI mobo have integrated graphics? If so, maybe it's on and overriding the nvidia card?

ok thanks. I'm still researching this.

Tonight, I'm going to try and remove the CMOS battery (for about an hour) and replace it. reseat all the cabling and try it again.

you might want to pull it out of the case and make sure you have the motherboard standoffs located int the correct positions. You could be shorting out the motherboard from the bottom. Also you only need to short the cmos jumper for 3-5sec, even with the battery in there it will clear.

Ok, I'll check the mobo manual to see the exact placements of the copper board risers. I'll put them there only.

Good to know about the CMOS jumper. I'll try that, while leaving the battery in.

I updated the BIOS on my TA690G (integrated 1250 ATI). I had no video although everything else seemed to work ok. I switched from a DVI cable to VGA and it all worked. The BIOS updated reset to defaults settings and changed video output. Might want to try both cables.

Looking at your mobo & psu on newegg shows your mobo only has the 4pin CPU power connector. you said "Also, the 12v connector is the 6-prong plug, correct? if so, then yes, it's in place." which sounds like you have a PCI-e power plug plugged into your mobo (which if the keys fit shouldnt be a problem as those both only have yellow (+12V) and black (gnd) power cables in them). The only problem w/ having a pci-e plugged into the mobo would be unbalenced loads on your rails. Also want to make sure the SLI selector card is installed w/ the words "single graphics card" closest to the slot/mobo. Also I'd think you'd need your video card in the top/blue PCI-e 16x slot.
You could also try another psu, maybe this one is just bad....

90% of the time problems like this are related to the RAM. I'd try booting with each individual stick and see if that's the problem.

Well, it turns out the mobo was bad. Took it to a computer shop and I was told it needed to be replaced.

I'll RMA it and see what I can do.

Thanks again for all the quick help.
