Just put together my new build. Before connecting sdd and dvd drives, I just wanted to power it on to make sure its ok - but im getting NO video signal at all.

Here is the build:
Intel G3258 CPU
MSI H81M-E34 Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB RAM
Hyper 212 Evo cooler
MSI GTX 670 (from my other PC)
520 watt PSU

So far all I did was hook up all of the above. Tried with both an HDMI cord and a DVI cord and both didnt work.

Ive built many computers in the past, and cant figure out why I cant get a video signal out of this one. Im really hoping I dont have any dead parts on my hands. I know for sure the PSU and Graphics card are good because I just took them out of working computers.

Where do I start the troubleshooting?

Have you tried it with just one stick of ram? Have you tried using just the onboard video?

ok, now it gets even weirder. I did that last night and it didnt work. But I tried it again today because I cant think of anything else.

Just took the video card out, and it worked! I was able to go into the bios, restart with ctrl alt del, and I thought I was all good......

Turn the computer off to just test out a few case fans to see which I was gonna put in, and now when I plugged it back in and powered on - im back where I started.

Again I have no video output. Tried both DVI and HDMI with the onboard graphics with no success. I even tried a different monitor with the same result. Nothing is hooked up besides the bare essentials to get it to boot.

Getting frustrated!!!!

ok it gets even more weird now - but im starting to think its a bad power supply.

I plugged one of the case fans in (4 pin molex), and it didnt work. Unplugged it and it worked again! Did this a few times to the point where it was apparent that when that fan was plugged in - the system wouldnt output any video.

Finally after about 5-6 times of checking it, now it doesnt work in any kind of setup. Listening to the cpu fan spin up and turn off, it seems like it keeps rebooting.

I dusted out that power supply before installing in this build (was working fine on old build (old AMD cpu with a 8800GT). The only think that makes sense is that maybe something happened when dusting thats causing a short in the PSU?

Getting frustrated. Since I am sometimes able to get into bios and everything SEEMS ok - does that exclude some parts from being the culprit? I was also able to pug in 4 pin molex after getting into bios, and nothing went wrong - but it would not boot at all with fan plugged in. ugh

Should be enough, but I agree that your symptoms sound like a power problem somewhere.

Im even running it without the GPU, so it should be more than enough.

Gonna go try out my other PSU (Corsair 750watt) from my main PC. Hopefully thats whats causing problems. Ill report back in about 20.

If thats the problem, hows Antec's warranty? I didnt buy this too long ago - maybe 1-2 years, but I dont think I have my recipt anymore. Hopefully I can find the order through newegg or tigerdirect or wherever I bought it.

I have always had good luck with Antec units, so I am half and half on hoping that is the issue :)

It may seem a bit ridiculous, but this sort of this happens when people forget to connect the aux power cable to the graphics card.

Ok its official, this computer might cause me to commit suicide.

So it was the Power supply that was the issue - or at least I think it was. Swapped in my Corsair 750tx and everything started to work perfect. Mind you im setting this up on my extra screen via either HDMI or DVI. Once I knew it was working, I put all the other parts in, booted it up, and it still worked. So I loaded Ubuntu on a USB stick and installed, just so I could play around with it. I installed ubuntu, and then I wanted to try it on my main screen, so I shut down the computer, and hooked it up to my 1440p screen via displayport.

Well, it didnt work - I cannot use this computer with that monitor via displayport..... Went back and forth between the two screens to make sure it wasnt just a one time thing, but no, makes no sense.

When I boot up on that screen, sometimes I cant even see the whole boot logo, and when I go into the bios, its completely fucked up. Like not just that I cant see most of it, but theres weird characters all over, and I got an error when I tried to do something there.

I go back to the other screen and everything is completely fine. I did notice my date/time got reset in the process - which is also weird.

I dont know what to think at this point. I also dont know whether that PSU is actually bad now, and maybe this shitty motherboard just doesnt like it for some reason.

Any ideas?

OK so Ive been doing a lot of reading, and apparently UEFI does not like displayport for some reason. There was a clear issue with the bios when I was actually able to boot into them when connected via displayport, but the problem completely goes away when using hdmi.

Im not on the most recent bios, so ill update today to see if that helps. Worst case scenario - it seems that I should at least be able to get into windows (and linux now that I have the nvidia driver installled), so if something in the bios needs changing then Ill have to use an HDMI or DVI cord to fix it.

Weird because Im pretty sure my main computer uses uefi (GA-Z77X-UD5H), and Ive been able to get into the bios via displayport.
