No video partway through XP Install

Having a heck of a time here...

I just ordered all new parts and built the computer. Everything seemed to go fine, no errors, etc. The video comes in fine at startup, I boot the XP CD, load SATA drivers, and then as soon as it says it is loading the windows setup the screen goes blank and never recovers. I can hear and see that the computer is still running, but the screen is blank. I have tried mutiple montiors, multiple CDs, checked everything I can think of, and the video card appeared to work fine up until the setup. But as soon as it tries to load the setup after it loads all the drivers the monitor goes blank and does not recover.

I am lost. =( Any ideas?

I've had this happen in a repair install of XP Home. In my case, a second attempt at the install worked fine.

One thing to check MIGHT be the BIOS sleep settings. Be sure to turn OFF any built-in BIOS sleep functions. Windows will take care of those for you.

Beyond that, my next suggestion would be to scrounge up a junk video card and use it for the install. If it works, you can always re-install the video card after Windows is working.

Thanks for the idea, but unfortunately it didn't work. I will try to find a junker PCI videocard somewhere.

Any other ideas?

Nah. Not at this moment. I've definitely seen very fancy video cards that can't properly handle a simple DOS screen. A friend had a fancy ATI card that wouldn't handle the BIOS screen of his new computer. He had to change to a $10 video card whenever he wanted to adjust his BIOS settings. 🙁

Anyway, good luck. Maybe somebody else will have a better idea.

So it's actually possible that my 7800gt can't load the windows install screen but works perfectly fine otherwise? What poor design...

Who knows....it's POSSIBLE. Or you could just have a bad video card. These are just (educated) guesses at this point.

A quick UseNet search reveals that this is a fairly common problem....

Are you using an LCD in digital (DVI) mode? If so, you might try switching it to analog (VGA) mode for the install.
Some fixes mentioned in UseNet posts:
a) Updated PC BIOS.
b) Incorrect hard drive jumper settings. (!)
c) Temporary install of PCI video card.

My video card only has DVI out, but I checked it on a CRT monitor as well using a converter and same result.

Something I neglected to mention before is that not only do the monitors go blank, but they actually go to sleep.

I am going to check my hd jumper settings and update my BIOS.

Thanks again, will update what happens.

Yeah. I've seen that happen. Good luck. Please post if/when you find a solution. Most of the UseNet posts NEVER have a followup post that confirms what actually fixed the problem.

Use care if you update the BIOS.....Follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter.

I've had this issue before when the XP install got to 34 minutes remaining(that's when it installs peripheral drivers). Turned out to be my IBM keyboard for some reason. Took forever to diagnose though.
